S&W MP 15-22 Sport

Over a year ago, I bought a slightly used S&W MP 15-22 Sport, dirt cheap. I bought it partially in an attempt to entice the younger 2 grandsons into shooting and as a fun plinkster. I shot about 1-2 hundred rounds, while fun to shoot, it’s hardly a target rifle, at this point the mag spring broke (I was told a common issue), It then sat for 5-6 months before I did anything.

As I live in NYS, and with the Safe Act, the mag has to be locked (pinned) into the lower assembly, you have to break open the rifle and then reload the mag, while its pinned in the lower, somewhat of a PITA. It also means, I have to have the FFL, remove the pin, to get it repaired, during this time the gun is locked away by the FFL.

Then Covid, retirement, the wife’s passing and all of the estate crap, I finally got around to it and called Wednesday to check on the rifle, it’s been done since late September-early October, but either they did not call or I missed them. I picked it up early this afternoon. I’ll try it again, hopefully this week.

Why on earth would you bring it to an FFL?
15-22 mags have removable base plates. You could have bought a new mag and used it's internals as a replacement or probably called S&W for the parts.
Push that peg in and slide the base plate forward and off the mag body. The spring and follower will come out.

You don't have to take it to an FFL to repair it. @ArmedCorgi has great advice. Very quick and easy fix

I've owned one since it came out. Great gun. I never had an issue with any mags. I also don't use those tiny 10 rounders either. Maybe it's an issue with those?
Mine shoots well and is reliable, but also isn't NYS compliant. I've always been able to get tight groups even while rapid firing it. Go through several hundred rounds pretty quick in a short range session.

$20 isn't bad, especially when you consider that if you couldn't get a replacement spring from S&W and had to buy a new mag to cannabalize, it would have likely cost you more. But at least you wouldn't have waited so long to get your rifle back.

I’m not sure I would ever have not bought it new, but used, at the price asked, was another story. It had the mag lock or pin in it, when it got it. I’m usually more of a bolt action type of guy

We've had customers asking us for M&P-22 magazines for about a year now and they just aren't available from our Suppliers. That said, I think some came in last week.
Too bad the magazines used in conversion kits like CMMG's won't work with the S&W as their magazines are <$20 and WELL built.

I think they have a loader for these to quick load them. A quick google search didn’t bring it up, but I thought a quick loader was available for them.

There are ears on the mags that let you basically pull the spring down and drop rounds in.

I took the 15-22, along with a Ruger Precision Rimfire and a Savage Mk II FV-SR, to shoot it, I blew through about 350 rounds of CCI AR Tactical ammo. All of the rifles shot flawlessly, not a single issue with the ammo. 3-4 hrs at the range, had a great time, was going to stay longer, but toes were getting cold.

So far I’ve shot it 3 different times, the reload was awkward the first time, I found a easy way of doing it, so while not exactly easy, not terrible either. I’m was quite surprise how well it ran.
