Safe act legal question

so back in 2014 i picked up an m1 carbine from a friend of mine and ive decided to sell it and move on. now my friend had it registered at one point when the law was established (i believe he did it after the court ruling that threw out the 7 round limit). his reason being he did not want to modify it, which he did eventually and had it successfully removed from registration. now is their any possible legal repercussions i could face if i sell said carbine to another individual in NY?

yes i know legal advice from the internet has no value please dont patronize me. im more concerned about someone putting a bayonet lug back onto it then if that person gets caught could it come back to harm me in any way, thats basically what i want to know.

If your friend had it registered does it mean you already sold it?
I guess one could register something they do not own yet but not sure what the answer would be if later they ask him where the gun is.
Or perhaps I do not understand the question.

Would a FFL be involved? That would cover you right there.
If not, when you sell it, note on the bill of sale that the gun meets all legal requirements and that the bayonet lug has been removed. Take a picture as well.
You have no control over what the buyer does after the sale. Anyone can buy a gun at Dick's and duct tape a bayonet onto it.

If it was me I would keep a copy of the "Deregistration" receipt or screen shot/confirmation as well as the FFL transfer receipt ... I would not trust the state to keep the records straight.

Easy answer for someone trying to stay within the law:
The transfer by law now in this despotic state will need to go through an FFL. Once done your clear of the firearm in question and any future features and miss adventures.

thanks for the info guys, fortunately i found a buyer out of state so i dont need to worry about this, however do i still need to go through an FFL to ship to someone with a C&R license?

Really? I thought C&R qualified as a valid FFL for interstate transfers. Or do you need FFLs on both sides of the transfer? As in, if Steelcorps had his C&R too it would then be legal to ship straight to the other C&R?

Well considering you have to have it sold through an ffl to make it legal the repercussions would be on the ffl not you. All gun sales in nys per safe act need a background check. If your worried about it take a picture of it with the serial number and have a bill of sale written up and signed with what features are or are not on the gun. Technically to comply with safe they cant put a bayonet lug back on it unless they weld it on. The threads are supposed to be removed.
