Fulton County although a depressed shithole is pretty easy going with guns. Pistol permits are some of the easiest to get in the state. I believe something like 1/3 of the population has a permit, unrestricted is equally not difficult to obtain. Last Saturday one of my neighbors was doing 30 round mag dumps, no one cared.
I have a certain amount of respect for people like your neighbor who don't give a mother fuck and do what they want. I guess when you're a little older and have lawyer money it doesn't matter that much.

At least in WNY or even anywhere in NY for that matter Wyoming county is about as good as you can hope for.
Even still it's very common to find repeal safe act signs everywhere.

I would say most counties that are west of the Hudson and dont have a larger city in them: Ithaca, Syracuse, Albany, Rochester, Buffalo.
I'd probably do some research on where those Sherrifs stand on other Amendments as well. I think the 4th Amendment is being eroded at a faster rate than the 2nd with Stingrays, license plate readers, etc.

I don't even do anything illegal and I still want a no knock proof front door. Shit is scary, the cops have gotten out of control, to think I was a thinblueliner at one time, talk about cringe.

For a curtilage, there's no hopping or crawling through allowed (absent an "exigency"), but they can peer through or over. An unlocked gate is iffy. Safer to lock the gate. Basically if you have an unsecured path to the door that you generally permit uninvited visitors or delivery people to come and knock, the police can come and knock and snoop around on the way too.
They can hop or crawl through a fence that's not the curtilage of a house though. You can't just fence off a field (you can, but if there's no one living there it's still an open field that law enforcement can enter). There are limits too, you can't fence off a 100 acre "curtilage" around your house.

I moved to Lewis county last year. I love it here. Soon I will have the wife on board to leave the sate but she has a thing about wanting to be close to her family. Clerks that do the pistol permit stuff are nice. Same day amendments. The local gun clubs are pretty nice and cheap to join. Action shooting competitions are just catching on but there are other competitions that are popular. The most popular lawn ornament is a no safe act sign.
Sheriffs tend to deal with real crime and you can actually see your tax dollars going into the community and not being wasted.

If you think the answer is “no,” I’m afraid you are mistaken. Cops generally respond to complaints, and different agencies have different policies, but on any open land it’s legal for law enforcement to enter private property without any probable cause or warrant to investigate. It’s only buildings and the curtilages around dwellings that are protected.
I think Erie County outside Buffalo and some suburban towns is actually pretty friendly toward guns compared to Tompkins, Onondaga, Albany, and Monroe counties. More comparable to the rest of Western NY. Tompkins and Albany are the worst of that batch.
