A retired LEO Leaving his wallet 2 loaded handgun’s and extra ammunition in a knapsack in a car overnight doesn’t sound fishy to you?
Either this guy is a total moronic idiot or there is more to the story. I would like to believe the latter as I have many many friends who are retired or still on the job and I know this would never fly with.

As a retired LEO myself, I can't imagine a scenario in which this wasn't the act of a moron, if it happened as reported. Of course, that is a big if.

The law says you can't leave a loaded pistol in a car, locked or not. And it says a "loaded pistol" is when it is near the ammunition even if it's not in the pistol.

NO!!! I am saying that I expressed what I am sure the law says. I recall that from a pistol law book published by the retired NYSP investigator and a lawyer from a class I once taught. Just because I am not scrambling to find the source for you doesn't mean I am wrong. Maybe I will get so mad at your accusations that I will ignore you. Or maybe I will hustle to prove you wrong. Patience is a virtue you seem to lack. I try to be a gentleman on this forum. You might try it.

Just because the information is in a book published by a former NYSP investigator doesn't make it the law. Similarly, interpretations of the law published by the NYSP (i.e. -Safe Act Guide) doesn't mean its the law.
Read the text of the laws and base your decisions on that. I have read through all that crap several times and am sure there are no "safe storage" or "bullets next to a gun mean its loaded" parts in there. We've got enough nonsense to deal with here, there's no need to pile on some more make-believe nonsense.
If the retired chief broke any laws, he would have been arrested for it. I didn't see anything in the articles that makes me think the cops were trying to cut him a break.

I don't need to be patient when people try to put out misinformation as fact/law. Sorry being slow at (in this case not) finding wrong information will lead to others believing fairytales of "gun store" lawyers

ive read a bunch of NY gun laws and never seen in it car or even house has to be locked up .. whats the diff anyways .. its my damn property ..
