Savage 99 Accuracy Problem

Repair of the tang sight was uneventful and went easier than I thought. Here's the before pic of the bottom of the sight. There was a little sliver of paper in between the sight and the receiver. At first I thought the scratch by the screw hole was a crack, but I got lucky!



I clamped the sight between a couple of pieces of copper to act as a heat sink and heated the tang around the screw hole. Once I thought I saw a little color chang to reddish, I gave it a couple of taps with a brass hammer untill I got the curve right.

When I remounted it, I used a little epoxy as bedding compound and screwed it down. Looks good! I didn't even mess up the bluing on the sight.





When I get a chance, I'll make up a few rounds and try it again. I still can't figure out how to adjust the sight up and down. Any guidance is appreciated.

oh! Sorry I forgot. If you have a lever action then use the boresighter but I see you have another bigger problem that explains why your rifle shooting so high.
Based on the last picture it looks like your rear sight base is bent upwards due to some type of damage.
the base should be well seated over the stock
following the same curve towards the grip and comb.

Lyman made quite a few styles of rear and tang peep sights. I don’t see a number stamped anywhere. That would help to try and identify that particular peep. In one of your pics there is an SA stamped on the back side. Were there any other numbers there?

Nothing else.

That knurled collar turns about half a turn, but nothing else on the peep stem moves.

Hopefully it hits where its supposed to now and I won't have to worry about it.

I think it’s a locking knurl nut. You can’t get the peep stem to turn at all?

I think you’re going to need some penetrating oil. This is what the stem looks like for adjusting.

Peep doesn't turn. I've been trying to be gentle with it.

I'd like to find either a instruction sheet or schematic.

If I remember correctly some of the 1A style peeps had a pin in the base of the peep. Flip it all the way forward and take a look.

drop the whole part in penetrating oil for a day or two.
heat will not hurt neither.
It looks nothing is hardened alloy that is good news for you.
