Savage BVNSXP-SR 22LR (Wal-Mart Special)

I had read about it on the net, so I went to the Wal-Mart in Central Square, NY, to buy a Savage BVNSXP-SR, a Mk II model, 22LR with a 20” threaded heavy barrel, an Accu- Trigger, in a Boyd At-One style, fully adjustable laminated stock, in Kawasaki green with a inexpensive Weaver scope, so as a package. I looked it over and bought it. It seems to be offered as a Wal-Mart only package.

I shoot in a couple of 50 foot, open/iron sight indoor bullseye leagues, its putting 10 shot into a 1“ bullseye, shooting a specific target and ammo (CCI HP mini-mags), 5 targets a week over a 30 week season, so your average over 150 targets.

the tag was $429, so with sales tax it was in the $460 - $465 range

my only complaint is they only ship it with a 5 shot mag

I have 6 of the Savage Mk IIs, all with heavy barrels, all of them are excellent shooters, I only wish my Savage B22 FV-SR shot as well as the Mk IIs.

Shape looking rifle and nice targets!! I guess this league you are shooting (Bullseye) is of hand? Does everyone need to shoot mini-mags? if not CCI standard velocity may even shoot better.

The league requirement for ammo is CCI HP mini-mags, nothing else is allowed. The same target, the same ammo, the rules were set so it was up to the shooter and his rifle, all other factors were eliminated.

Your results with CCI SV, is apparently much different from mine, for me they have been total crap. They have always been crap, they are very inconsistent (bang, bang, BANG, pop, pop, puff, etc, etc) I have boxes from 5 or 6 different lots numbers, from about a 4 yr span, they all the same. It’s a like who makes the pick up truck, everyone has a favorite, that may be considered crap to others. Personally if they work for you great, I’d personally rather shoot Remington Thunderbolts, than CCI SV.

That is definitely odd, but as you say what ever works for you best use.

This might be the first criticism of the consistency of CCI SV I've ever heard. Interesting!

It’s a 3 x 9 scope, with absolutely no model number on it or in the manual, but according to the manual, it has a lifetime guarantee. I wonder how good that is as , I thought I read Weaver got out of the scope business. I have to check to see if any of the kids or grandkids need a scope.

Have they fixed the magazine problems on the savage? I had looked into getting one but all the info I saw had talked about the flimsy magazines that were the weak point of the rifle.

I have 6 of the Mk IIs, I have not had a single magazine issue with any of them, my B22 has been a nightmare

Wow! I'm just impressed that the Walmart near you is still selling firearms and/or ammo.
The Walmarts I normally would go to in Oneida and Dewitt stopped selling both a couple years ago.
I might have to take the short trip from Chittenango to Central Square sometime soon.

apparently the Wal-Marts in Auburn, Central Square, Watertown, Massena, Malone and Plattsburgh, still sell or did sell until recently rifles, no hand guns. There are probably others, but those are the ones I know of.

Yes they got rid of the flimsy magazine latch,I haven't had problems with mine yet but I will grab the updated magazine when I come across one.

The league is an unofficial league started by my cousins almost 50 yrs ago (I’ve shoot on snd off for 30+ yrs), it’s a 50 foot open/iron sight bullseye league, you have to use the required target, with a 1” bullseye, that everyone uses, use only CCI HP mini-mags, no bipods or front rests, rifle must be hand held. It’s 5 targets a week, 10 shots per target. Your weekly average is the average of the 5 targets, max of 100 points each, its the total of the 30 events (150 targets total) averages that is your yearly average. I shot a couple of practice targets, then shoot the 5 targets, score them, take pictures, then text your weekly averages and target pictures to the score keeper. We have about 80 shooters in about 6-8 states, they are relatives, high school classmates, kids, grandkids, friends and some of their friends. If you win you get your name on a cheesy plaque, and a $500 gift card, second place gets a hardy handshake, third place get a friendly handshake, after that maybe a nod in your direction. Currently we’re about 10 weeks into this years season, I currently tied for third, with a 98.2 average.

That’s good to know. I’ve seen a lot of the FV-SR models for sale and they have caught my eye, but everything I have seen said to avoid them due to the magazine issues.

Maybe it’s me or the specific rifles I’ve own, I had 6 rifles bedded, none of them shot better, 5 of them I either removed it or replaced the stock. And about 90% of the rifles, shot better with a chuck of rubber sheet clamped between the fore stock and the barrel.

With absolutely nothing going on, after finishing the Midsomer Murders dvd set#22, that arrived Thursday, at 8 pm, I decided to head to the range. As usual not a sole, anywhere at the range, time get one last shoot in 2021. This was a single rifle day, this was the first outing for the third Savage BVNSXP-SR, one of the Wal-Mart Specials.

I shot about 250 rounds of the Federal bulk range pack (blue box)

As it was the first outing, the bolt was rather stiff, it loosened up some, by the end of the night. I went through the sighting in procedure, the shot some targets. Other than the stiff bolt, I had zero issues. From what I can see so far, the rifle shoots great, it is easily equal to the other two, I now own 7 of the Savage Mk II series rifles, only one of them is disappointing, the rest are very good. It’s also strange that the Boyd At-One stock on the Savage, except for the color and the action cut out, is identical to the At-One that was on my CZ 457s, on the CZ, it did not feel right, but on the Savage, it just seems to work.

The Federal bulk ammo for me worked perfectly.

Lots of targets, lots of holes in paper, again one big smile, a great time at the range. Cleaned up, made the 6 mile trip home, getting to the house at about 11:45 pm.
