Savage Model 1899 questions

My father gave this to me a few days ago and I know absolutely nothing about Savage rifles. It is a Model 1899, .303 Savage caliber, and I have been able to find out it was made in 1911. It looks like a pretty rare piece, as you can see from the pictures and as for it's value, I have no idea. If anyone here can give me any information about it's value or where I might find information about it, I would greatly appreciate it.

I sure don't know the whole story on that one but back in the day they were an excellent gun, well made and accurate, the .303 was a little bit better than a 30-30.
I 'had' one years ago and the bruises on my ass still have not healed.

Very nice rifles. I think more accurate than the Winchester or Marlin lever guns. They can use pointed bullets since it has a rotary magazine.

I have one in 250-3000 made around 1926 and like it a lot. The tang sight ads to the accuracy.

As to value, mine is a rather plain take down model. I'm guessing value is somewhere around $800. With the engraving on yours, I'd guess ist worth significantly more. It looks well done.

Wow. Nice Savage! Beautiful and a classic. I have the book The Ninety-Nine by Murray and it has great information on the different models. Facebook has a great group. If you like I can post in the group those pics and see what the community says.

Maybe a specialty M1899 Leader with upgraded rear sight. First introduced in 1905. Is it a take down model?

Nice piece.. Looks like a custom Griffin and Howe scope base mounted to receiver. (Or one of several different makers). looks like a takedown version , seeing that front inch of separate receiver.. Special order wood, checkering & Engraving make that a real beauty. Very nice of your Dad.

What an absolute beauty!! Beautiful wood , adjustable tang peep sight, exceptional engraving work on the receiver and a jeweled bolt! That’s a gift to cherish and hand down through the generations.

Certainly WAYYYY better than most of the 99's that came through or even show up for sale...
Spitballing it, I'd say three grand easily enough.
The .303 Savage was a proprietary and now obsolete cartridge, but you can still get Dies, and even Factory Ammo every now and again.
If you find "old" ammunition for it, don't be surprised if the case necks split, and be sure to clean it with solvent made for corrosive primers (bath of hot soapy water or ammonia solution) will neutralize the corrosive salts, just be sure to dry and oil afterwards.
