I think it is a brilliant solution, and I cannot imagine why it would not work.

Not sure if I need split-screen software, tho.

Wondering: Did you design this pretty much on the fly, or have you been thinking about it for a while ?

It came to me when I was answering your post about night vision. I was thinking about the cheapest digital night vision you could get and then I remembered the cheap VR headsets and realized we don't actually care about night vision and these would work, since everyone already has the expensive electronic parts in their pocket.

It may be cliche, but your solution was classic "think outside the box".

If I were much younger, I'd attempt to crowdfund a version of it.

I suspect a practical version of your inspiration would be much simpler than the machine I have imagined for decades.

I want to engineer a machine that both applies and removes protective gloves in seconds, while maintaining 100% sterility.

I am certain using current glove design may be the roadlock; that unique gloves would need to be invented.

Perhaps gloves on a "chain" (think machine gun ammo). Or gloves with rigid collars by the wrist.

But no, I'm not even close - yet.

To make it fully automatic from a box of gloves would be a bit complicated, but modern robotics is pretty capable.

Don't need a strong vacuum, you can deal with a leaky seal by just overwhelming it with volume.

I am pretty sure you could make off the shelf gloves work.

Probably don't need expensive Rx glasses. Maybe just some cheap reading glasses from the dollar store.

I just borrowed a pair of my wife's and they made a big difference.

You either need the split screen app or close one eye though.

I have begun experimenting with this.

The Viewer comes with HUGE bullseye lenses built-in, which, surprisingly, focus on the screen rather well.

The PD (Pupillary Distance) is easily adjustable.

With the phone, the entire assembly is heavy - as expected.

Issues:

#1 All the Split-Screen Software programs seem to be for games or videos, and don't seem to work for this purpose. And it seems Split-Screen is neither necessary nor desirable. A simple Camera App is what is needed.

#2 Trying to adjust everything while simply HOLDING the phone in place works poorly, because the Camera software "sees" the outer, hinged door (which I have left open as an expediency), and focuses on it - and not on the distant objects I wish to see.

#3 The Android Camera App that came with my Moto Phone has a large black area at the bottom of the screen, with icons. It is very annoying and not at all useful.

I can set the Camera App for Landscape Mode, and Panoramic View.

This shows promise, but I really need to discover a Camera App that allows me to hide every icon when I wish.

A Camera App that listened to my voice "Zoom In" "Zoom Out" "Begin Recording", etc, would be ideal.

I don't have any, but if I was shopping for them it would depend a lot on what my budget was.

I think there are some cheapie ones out there that are probably crap for seeing in the dark, but would work fine for laser protection.

The cheapest most field expedient thing you could do would be one of those cardboard VR things that just holds your phone in front of your eyes.

Then just turn on the camera in the phone.

Get one of these and drill a hole for the phone's camera.

Bonus is you can have your phone record the incident and upload it to the cloud for a record of what happened that nobody on site can interfere with.

Ok, more real problems....

As the Phone's Camera is offset, what you see is offset. Big issue when you are trying to aim.

Also, although each eye is in focus, the images do not converge. The screen is just too close.

Each eye, alone, gives a decent view, but each is offset from reality in different ways.

Now, flipping the Phone to Portrait Mode centers the Camera - good.

But each eye still sees something different.

Try this: hold a single finger in front of your face, say, a foot away. You will see two fingers, as each eye sees that finger in a different location.

Focus crosseyed to see only one finger, and now anything distant is dual-imaged.

Ok, where does that leave us.

Proper Software may be able to solve the issue, but I'm not sure about that. And Split-Screen apps may not support Cameras, as no one (except us), needs that.

Centering the camera would help (mebe), but phones are not built like that.

Centering the Camera on ONE eye, and blocking off the other eye, could be useful.

A better solution would be TWO Phones, mounted with their Cameras centered on each eye. I actually have several old phones, that do operate. I could use them.

Rigging up a holding system would be tricky, but possible.

I'm going to need to hit the Dollar Tree, and see if some very high RX Reading Glasses will work as well as the VR Headset's Bulleye lenses. That would give me much more freedom to hold two phones up to my eyes and experiment.

It may still be possible to aim with this, in a pinch, if I used only one eye (my preferred one), while mounting the phone so the offset camera is at least close to that eye, and use an aiming laser to pinpoint the target.

That is likely what I will have to do for now.

Cell Phones center the camera's image on the screen.

So, in Landscape Mode, centering the camera on your eye accomplishes nothing.

But in Portrait Mode, it centers well horizontally. You can mount two phones with each camera at the proper PD.

Veritcally there is still an offset, but mounting the phones high solves that.

So I need two phones, both mounted in Portrait Mode. And mounted high.

There may still be an issue aiming perfectly, but probably something that could be trained to work by practice on a range.

And certainly would work if you utilized an aiming laser.

An app would be preferable (my son's Acer Desktop has Blue-Light Reduction software built-in), but a physical filter would also work.

Sounds like you just need to find the right camera app.

I think the one built into my galaxy does much of this already.

I'm glad to see you running with this idea. I do think there could be additional benefits for it.

Another thing to think about, my ATN scope is capable of streaming the video from the scope, reticle and all, via wifi. I have done that with my phone before.

If I swapped that scope to a HD gun, I could shoot around corners with this technique without exposing much more than a hand.

Add a split screen app and you could permanently have your sight picture in your dominant eye and your normal view in your non dominant.

Your Night Vision googles are truly amazing, but actually not what I am looking for.

Just showing you it's pretty much the same concept. Camera mounted on pair of goggles. If you're going to use vr goggles and phone, this app will split screen your camera.
