Hopefully this is the right thread. I know almost nothing about Muzzleloaders. They seem to be all different prices. I never hunted the late muzzle loader season because I was usually onto snowmobiling by then but the last couple years there hasn't been any snow. So I have been using a friends ML and I don't like doing that. I don't want to spend more than I have too but I always purchase a firearm assuming I will have it forever although muzzle loaders seem to update like bows and crossbows.....Any suggestions? What do I need to know....?

Buy a stainless steel CVA Wolf (it can still rust, though, so you still need to keep it clean), throw a decent scope on it, get 250 grain shockwave sabots and 120 grain of powder and you're off to the races. Very accurate, and pretty cheap.
Why stainless? Is black powder more corrosive?

Yea and so is the newer modern replacements. I think most arn't really corrosive itself but after firing in absorbs moisture. I know they can and will rust like crazy!

Yeah, nice and salty. It'll do a number on a gun so after firing needs to be cleaned out. I've noticed rust spots even on my "stainless" CVA if not cleaned and oiled.
The only expierience I ever had with a muzzleloader was from movies.

A friend of mine bought a budget muzzleloader from Runnings. One of the ones in the plastic packaging like 90% of products come in.
The whole process has come a long way apparently. The componants are good quality and easy to use. The gun is extremely accurate and reliable. This all from a $189 muzzleloader.

Still playing with loads when I get a chance to shoot to see what it likes.
I have a Knight Wolverine I won drunk bidding on an online auction. I haven't tried it yet but supposed to be very accurate with the barrel made by green mountain

I never use the ramrod that comes with a muzzleloader. Years ago I bought a range rod and have never looked back.
Range rods are inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes. I like the yellow synthetic one the Thompson Center sells.
Well worth the cost. Just my 2 cents.

IMO the new stuff .. pyrodex its more corrosive then real BP .. but if you load it .. shoot it at the end of the day and clean it that night .. and be ready for the next day

As the barrels rotate they pass stations that flush the barrel, add the powder, wadding, bullets, etc from bulk hoppers and then ram it down.
Last position adds and ignites the primer.
Would be completely ridiculous, but also fun as hell
Of course I have neither the time nor energy to design and build such a contraption, but it's fun to think about

The Puckel gun was another .. they just lacked the auto loading and cleaning

I use a cva accura mr. 100gr of blackhorn 209, cci 209m primers and a 290gr Barnes t ez or Hornady xtp 300 gr w/ harvester crushed rib sabots.
Like this combo, topped it with a Leupold ultimate slam 3-9x40.

Never mind the Pyrodex, it's corrosive and smelly crap. Go with triple 7 or Shockey's gold, cleans up with warm water and it don't stink.
I've had a few muzzleloaders over the last 25 years. I really liked the muzzleloader barrel on my mossberg 500. Had that gun for years and used it for everything. Had a couple cheaper muzzleloaders and a few better ones. If your not going to clean it often then get the cheapest one. Cause once you let the inside of the barrel that you will never get the accuracy back. If your not going to buy a new one every year then I'd recommend stainless. After shooting every available option of bullets and powder I will tell you that I personally will only recommend white lightning powder as it's the easiest to clean. As far as bullets are concerned I've had great accuracy with the powerbelts but accuracy doesnt mean the best. All the deer I've seen hit with powerbelts had almost no expansion and poor performance as far as stopping power. I've blood trailed too many of my and my friends deer after good hits farther than expected. First deer I shot with the Hornady hollow points made me and several people switch to the Hornady. I fire 240 gr sabots I believe they are the xtp ones but I'm not digging them out to check. Lol. And the rod supplies with most muzzleloaders will work if you put the right end on it. The soft lead bullets can get disformed if you use the wrong end. As far as accuracy thru all the barrels I've owned there is not a huge difference in accuracy with any of the brands or prices. If you work a few bullets and powder charges around you'll find a good combo. Don't just load up the max and fire it and think it's good enough. 90-110 grains is usually good for accuracy and will have more energy then you need. If you reload then you will understand how to work up a charge better but with a little bit of shooting you can really end up with a load you are happy with. I always loved muzzleloader season. Most the idiots already gave up. Peaceful. One shot one kill mentality of the hunters makes me feel better than opening day of shotgun on public land where you feel like it is Vietnam. Seems a lot of new hunters practice there reloading more then there aiming.

People should hunt with what they are comfortable with. When I was a young man I went with primitive archery and hunted with that gear exclusively, even during the gun season for deer. I never ever tried to make someone feel uncomfortable for the choices they make, for me it was a matter of trying to become a good hunter, which meant, understanding the game I was after, their environment, myself and my limitations, both physically and with my equipment, and how we all interact with each other. I didn't want to substitute technology for hunting ability. Plus, I got to, and still get to, make cool shit to hunt with which enhances the whole experience exponentially. I always fill my tag.

Critical *** un-foul your barrel /cap port before loading, meaning rid the barrel of oils and cleaner residue by firing a cap on a clean patch on the ramrod. I lost a few deer by skipping this step.
Make sure your powder , patch, or sabots are bottomed and packed tightly.
There's lots of little accessories that are well worth buying for cleaning, loading, and hunting.

Amen to that brother! My hunting skills became fine tuned once I started hunting with primitive equipment. A guy I know makes and hunts with an Atlatl . That shit takes some serious hunting skills.
