Scout Scopes?

I've always liked the idea of a scout scope sitting about 10" out in front of my eyes. Faster target pickup like a red dot but with some magnification 2-7.
I bought this Leatherwood Hi-Lux

back in 2013 for my mini 14 but it broke. Sent it back and they fixed it, sent it back and it went in the parts drawer. I just mounted it on a Saiga 308 and noticed I couldn't focus it when at 7 but at 2 it was fine. Took 1 shot and now nothing is in focus. So it's back to the drawing board.
What's your thoughts on scout scopes? Brand?
If I'm only looking for a 6ish" group at 200 yards am I better off with a red dot?

That’s the next one I was looking at.
I called Hi-Lux. Basically was told to ship it back, include $21 for return shipping, we’ll take a look at it and send you a bill to fix for the 2nd time. So much for their lifetime warranty. Screw them!

BURRIS 2-7 scout scope. Longest eye relief on any scope out there. Checkout Mr Gunsngears review on an M1A rifle. I had a HiLux and sent it back.

I'll be putting the Vortex on my Winchester 94 with the Pearson's mount for next year.
