Ahead of the release of their full budget analysis Monday, state Senate Republicans said Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive budget proposal includes $803 million in new fees for the coming fiscal year, which would grow to $4.5 billion by 2021.
That analysis is contrary to Cuomo’s claims in his budget presentation last week that the spending plan includes a single new DMV fee.
“The revenue comes from the millionaires’ tax,” Cuomo told reporters last week when asked about new fees or additions to current fees in his budget proposal.
“The governor gave what I believe is a very broad macro description of what was in the budget,” Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said after speaking to a meeting of the state Association of County Clerks in Colonie Monday morning. “A couple members asked questions, and I’m not going to dance around it: I was very surprised to see when you tell me there’s basically nothing and then there’s $250 million in new fees. That’s important for the public to know, and that’s important for it to be part of our discussion.”
Flanagan was referring to $250 million worth of fees related to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The Senate’s analysis shows another $553 million in fees for other state services on top of that. What the GOP considers those fees to be was not immediately disclosed.
