Ah, the good old Patriot Act.

Wherein, buried somewhere around page 1200 we were forbidden to buy more than 30 doses of Claritan a month (and required to show ID, and be entered into a database at each purchase).

Because clearly we were all making microbatches of artisanal meth to support terrorists.

I think @prambo was talking about passing this as a law by running it through the House and then up to the White House. I dont want to speak for him.

On point in my wheelhouse- "keyword" is passe. Pattern analysis is where it's at. I dont care what you say. I care about who you talk to and how often.

And you're a lot late on the data dump. It exists in MD and Utah it's just a question of who gets access and what they do with it.

The FBI isn't LE anymore, they're professional 5th columnists and, thus, I would consider it to be a home invasion.

Use VPNs and Tor for any browsing you want to keep your creepy uncle Sam in the dark on. Do your research. If the oppressed people of China can get around their infinitely more oppresive government's censorship, you can successfully hide what you do from our far less oppressive state that at least has to pretend like the Bill of Rights exists... some of it... Sometimes...

As usual with gov oppression, don't comply, and if there's nothing you can do, at least don't make it easy for them.

Quick google tells me this is true.

So in light of that McConnell can absolutely go fuck himself. He is a traitor in fact as are all those others who support this.

@Xae289 is right. VPN not bad but if you really want tracks hidden use Tor. I assume there are measures beyond that but I never looked into them.

Maybe so, but as we've seen with FISA, getting a warrant isn't all that hard and doesn't even have to be obtained on fact. At this point, it's all for show. Soon, no warrant will be needed. They will blatantly spy and surveil at will.

The Constitution is merely a historical document of a former society.

Yes, it technically required a warrant.

But apparently walking down the hall to get the rubber stamp for the warrant is too much trouble, so they had to streamline it.

I mean if you're an FBI agent, this makes perfect sense. The warrant requirement was just some annoying paperwork anyway. They are just eliminating some bureaucracy.

It's been proven that it wasn't actually a check on power at all anyway.

They need to find out how many cops are searching for information on the constitution and how it relates to their oaths so they can be put on the domestic threat list.

I dont know what you mean by "links"?

The physical limitations are storage space and speed. NSA's new facility out west rolled out with several calls to the fire department because the HVAC wasn't up to the task of cooling the machines.

The circuits to hall the traffic from the ISP to the intercept boxes.

It's not about the storage. They will locate the intercept boxes close to the ISP, those boxes will sort all the traffic and only direct the "interesting" stuff to the storage facilities.

I bet for every 10G of traffic they intercept they only store a few Mb of it.

Just use a VPN. It's not that they can't decrypt your traffic. They probably can. It's that the computational amount of effort it takes to unlock the browsing history of one individual is not worth it unless they have a really big reason to do so over far more important tasks.

Not how it works. Even if you buy the "mass collection of metadata without content" canard.

Coming from someone who's (I think) well known as an anti-conspiracy theorist around here.

Targeted surveillance yeah I will give you that but that's not what Patriot is about and that's not at issue here. Domestic leo has been able to do targeted intercept for a long time.

I am pretty familiar with the start of how it works.

They "get a warrant" and initiate either a metadata or full tap on the target of the warrant.

Either the packet headers or the full contents of all traffic to and from the target's IP address are duplicated and sent to the intercept box.

The intercept box will sort that traffic and decide what's "interesting" based on whatever criteria the they feel like configuring.

The circuit from the ISP to the intercept box is a possible bottleneck
