NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cynthia Nixon, a liberal activist and a star of the hit television series "Sex and the City," is considering a run for governor of New York, challenging incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, NY1 television said on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.

The actress has begun assembling staff, including two veterans of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's election team, NY1 said. Cuomo and de Blasio, both Democrats, have been politically estranged for years.

"Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it," Nixon's publicist, Rebecca Capellan, said in a statement. "If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public."

The primary is Sept. 13 and the general election Nov. 6.

Cuomo, 60, the son of late New York Governor Mario Cuomo, is seeking his third term this year. In his 2014 re-election, a primary challenger with little name recognition, Zephyr Teachout, won roughly 34 percent of the vote to Cuomo's 62 percent, leading to speculation that Cuomo, a moderate, might be vulnerable to a challenge from a well-funded progressive.

Nixon, 51, starred in the HBO television series from 1998 to 2004 about four women in New York City, playing the part of attorney Miranda Hobbes. The show later led to two feature films.

Asked on Tuesday about a possible challenge from Nixon, Cuomo told reporters on a conference call, "On people who may or may not run for governor on both sides of the aisle, that's up to them and we'll deal with it as the campaign progresses."

This is a great thing in my opinion. Let her run, let Cuomo deplete his funds. Best case scenario, she goes Green or Working Families Party and runs against Cuomo in the General. That splits the liberal ticket and the Republican gets in. More likely, she loses the primary but Cuomo depletes his campaign coffers and has less to work with only helping the Republican candidate to get in.

Now if only we had a decent Republican running.

Many I'm sure have not heard of him but republican Marc Molinaro, the current Dutchess County Executive, is expected to announce his run for NY governor next week. At a meeting of county GOP leaders last week, an informal poll showed he'll have the backing of the GOP party for a run against Cuomo.

Great in best case, but I don't see Nixon getting the support she'd need. Marc Molinaro, although lacking recognition, at least has some political experience and it appears that he'll have the backing of the GOP. Regardless, unfortunately, neither can compete with the "war chest" of ~$30 million that FUAC has to sell his bullshit across the state (and country).
