I spent a cold morning shooting at Sheepdog Warrior near Catskill. They have some covered shooting benches and steel targets set up out to 650 yards or so. You don’t need any special equipment at all.

I took my Savage Axis 2 223 with the 55 gr. Norma Tac 223 I have never shot the thing beyond 100 yards. I was able to quickly hit the 400 yard targets.

I’m happy to find a place in the Hudson Valley to shoot beyond 100 yards.

I was so focused, I forgot to take pics. I’ll post any older pics the rifle.

This is a fair criticism. I personally don’t think range fees are prohibitively high. Given what is available, the fees might even be described as competitive. Spending the whole day there is going to cost some coin. But, that will just keep people focused on shooting and not socializing. The cost of ammo will be the limiting factor for me.

Prices and time periods were also adjusted since I was there. If you've got your shit together, you don't need the amount of time you paid for when I was there. I don't remember what the prices were then vs. now. It doesn't really matter anyway.

Rant aside, that's a gorgeous gun, and that's some good shooting! What's the drop like at 400 yards? Several feet, isn't it? I'd love to get my SU-16 out to 300+, but it's tough to find a long range like that. Hopefully this one place nearby. It's about 30 mins away, but it's a whole complex with a dog park and everything, so it should be a nice time.

It was like 7.5 MOA. I think that’s about 30 inches.

I have access to a 600 yard range, but would like to know my dope is good to 1K with my puny rifles.
I'm planning to go up there with some friends and give them some support and also shoot a PRS match or two.

The PRS matches are the best bang for the buck. $40 for the day and they spot for you.

^^^^ what he said. The range is very nice, very well maintained. They have a very nice setup with a concrete pad and covered area for the rifle range. not only is there a 1k rifle range but they have 4-5 "bays" where they have 22 rimfire reactive targets, and other pistol bays with steel. all for the same rate.

I returned to SW this week. I got dialed in to the 400 yards know-your-limits target. I was able to his the 1.5 inch target four out of six tries. I cannot confirm or deny other long-range targets were hit.

I was able to chronograph these Sierra 69 gr. Matchking HP loads from my 223. Calculation inicates they may still be supersonic out to 800 yards.

I took an updated photo of the Savage Axis 2 XP 223 with the ludicrous muzzle brake.

That place is basically in my parents backyard, right where I grew up (5 miles away). Its a shame I haven't gotten over there yet, but hopefully I will this summer.

Forbes in Colonie, NY goes out to 1000yd and yearly membership is very cheap.

There's an interview when you apply, and a range orientation. It's a serious Club.

If you're seriously interested, I'd download and print the application. Fill it out, mail in the check, and let the chips fall where they may. Beat case scenario: they contact you for an interview, and 2 members present agree to be sponsors. Worst case- they send you your $120 back.

Even tho it's an hour drive, I'm seriously considering doing exactly that, in the Spring.
