Shoot 7.62x51 out of 308 for "plinking" - pros/cons?

Thread title says it all, what do you think about this? Aside from needing to calibrate my scope to both rounds, each time I shoot them, what are the pros and cons of this? I can see the 7.62 being cheaper because it's generally less powerful/less powder, but would that mean that the less powder would mean I would need to clean the barrel more? I already clean after I shoot, but would I really need to be on top of it (not forget) if I do a day of 7.62?

School me on this. I buy cheaper/plinking ammo for my pistols and better carry rounds, can I do the same w/ my Savage?

They are the same. The difference between them is so small it's not worth worrying about.

Thanks, @Plater1 - that's basically what I thought after reading, but didn't know if anyone else did this. Could be an easy way to keep a nice stockpile of "cheap" ammo around and keeping the good stuff for better occasions.

I think yesterday I was looking at my usual .80-$1/ppr vs .40-50/ppr? I can't remember though. Was looking on Targetsports. Not even talking about steel case either. I think those were comparable, but I did see brass in there at that price.

I shoot whatever is cheapest. 308 or 7.62 x 51 is the same.

That's kinda what I'm figuring I'll do. Shoot cheap shit until it's time to hunt w/ it, then recalibrate to the better stuff and bring home the bacon

What distances and what game are you hunting? The point of impact could vary greatly from 2 different cartridges.

I use both and have no problems. A small recalibration of the scope is needed for hunting season. 147 grain ball vs 150 grain Core-lokt.

Depends on how much practice I get with it. I'm hoping to hunt deer this year, and probably less than 100 yards, but that's because that's what everyone has told me I'll be shooting them at. As the spring/summer rolls on, I'd like to shoot 100-400y just for fun, but I'm realistic in the idea that if I do get one, it won't be more than 100-125 at most? I could be wrong, this is my first season (if it all works out).
