Seems counter intuitive but if its angled right and he is accurate in his assessment of the fast moving round being destroyed on the steel rather than bouncing back....dunno. I mean you saw him do it right there in that video, but my mind keeps going back to that one video of the guy shooting the 50BMG who lucked out and had his ear muffs knocked off from a ricochet instead of his head. He was shooting some kind of steel and at a much farther distance.
My club prohibits the steel now because some moron thought it was a good idea to shoot steel from ten ft. and a frag hit another member in the face. Idiots.
i have bleed my own blood from shooting steel plate at 50 feet.
If you hit the plate front and center all is fine.
my 45ACP hit the top edge of the plate and came back and split open my shin.
sure i have shoot 1000s of rounds and been hit only twice, but if you look all around the 50' line it is littered with lead and jackets. more stuff than you can count comes back.
shoot paper it is way safer. (guy in the video looks like a douche!)
I have shot as close to 5 yards with no issue and as far as my eyes can see. Once I got hit with a ricochet from about 25 yards. Depends on how the steel is angled.
Once or twice you can get away with anything. When you shoot a lot the odds are against you. Even when all of the safety rules are obeyed freak accidents do happen. Idiots like this guy increase the odds. Shooting is still safer than most recreational outdoor activities.
