Shooting bench for truck bed

Red wing blackbirds are here, must be spring.

My local range has a less than optimized layout, and one way to work around it would be a bench in the bed of my pickup. Might be good when shooting on state land too...even on my own property.

Anybody do this? There are several commercial benches that would work, even some home built jobs on goob tube. Thoughts?

I have this one, paid 90 bucks for it. Its very sturdy and folds up nicely. Would work out well in the back of a truck.

Except that having a loaded gun in/on a vehicle is against the law in NY. Only exception is a handgun with a valid pistol permit.

Private property for target shooting you'll probably be ok. State land, not so much

A person may not transport or possess a shotgun, rifle or crossbow in or on a motor vehicle unless the firearm is unloaded in both chamber and magazine or the crossbow is unloaded or taken down. A loaded firearm may be carried or possessed in a motorboat while legally hunting migratory game birds.

A muzzleloader is considered unloaded when the cap is off the nipple, the primer is removed, the primer powder is removed from the flintlock pan, or the battery is not in an electric-fired muzzleloader.

A crossbow is considered unloaded when it is uncocked. A crossbow is considered taken down when the limbs have been removed from the stock, securely fastened in a case, or locked in a trunk.

I tried that long ago. I found the truck wriggled a lot with any slight shift in body position. Not worth it.

It is in the hunting regulations. It may be in other regulations/laws. I believe there is case law if anyone is interested in looking for it.

I've often wondered about that. Does the magazine have to be empty as well? Or just no magazine in the gun?

I have a friend who got a ticket for loaded gun in the vehicle. Mag was loaded. Chamber was clean. He does not have a hunting licence and was not hunting. The sheriff called the Dec. And an eco came and gave him the ticket a few days later. I will remind you all that ANY gun violations on your record will disqualify you for a pistol permit. So don't do this or fire within 500' of a house or your life might get a bit more interesting. I will add that the mag was IN his gun. The gun wasn't compliant. Had a 20 rd mag fully loaded. Lost that gun for good. I keep loaded mags next to my guns all the time and get stopped by leo and Dec regularly. They check to make sure it's unloaded and that's it. Purposely shooting from a vehicle is asking for trouble.

Dang, yalls Sheriffs are dicks.
Around here cops read the situation and use their own discretion.
I you were shooting a rifle from your truck bed at targets, they would not bother you
If you were shooting from your window at a deer at 62 MPH......they may get you.
Im talking local Sheriff and DEC....NYSP would most likely take your gun and arrest you.
But, I havent seen a Trooper around here for awhile.
We country folk....and country folk do country folk things......like lean our shotgun on out truck while we piss.
