Shotgun Technicality

Both the ATF and NYS define a shotgun as having a smooth bore. Nowhere do I see anything about rifled barrels.

Technically speaking, by definition, if I have a rifled barrel, could it be considered a rifle?

Just thinking about this as I sit here in my blind with a rifled barrel "shotgun" in shotgun only area.

So, a shotgun shell is not normally considered a metallic cartridge is it?

Not only that, but looking at this shotgun, isn't the name of the manufacturer and place of manufacture supposed to be on the receiver? This only gives the model and serial number.

If the manufacturer says shotgun in the invoice that is most likely a shotgun but otherwise everything is quite
arbitrary and open to interpretation.

I would start by the definition of what smooth bore vs rifling means because a rifled choke
can have similar effect to a rifled bore but it is not part of the rifle bore.
Same as the metallic / non metallic definitions.

If we can get these polycases and they are reliable then our firearms no longer meet the definition of rifle and therefore no long meet the definition of assault weapon, per NYS penal law. Hahahah

I don’t believe that a typical shotgun hull is considered a metallic cartridge, as only a third or less of it is metal.

I get the comment but don't think that would work out as rifle would still be designed (or redesigned whatever that means) to fire a metalic cartridge irrespective of what type of ammo you happen to be using with it.

Same goes for shotgun I believe under NY law it would still be considered a shotgun with a rifled barrel and shotgun slugs as shotgun itself was designed to fire a fixed shotgun shell through smooth bore regardless of what type of barrel / choke you happen to be using on it to hunt. JMO
