Wife just called, she and my daughter are in lockdown in the Old Navy stock room while the police sweep the mall. They are very shaken up as the shooting was very close to them and was pretty amplified by all the concrete. My daughter is only 9 and I cant even imagine how scared she is. I could hear her crying in the background when I spoke to my wife. I feel helpless. Didn’t know what else to do but fill you guys in. Sorry just venting.

Agreed. Consider yourself lucky. Carrying protection isn't reserved for "the bad part of town" or the "rough neighborhood" anymore. My wife can't seem to grasp that.
No but once I knew she was safe it was the first thing I said to her. She took the course shortly after I did 5 years ago but never followed through with it. I just told her,” I bet you’re regretting that now”. Don’t think it was the best time to say that!
My wife is pretty much in agreement with me with the whole carrying thing. She just didn’t follow through with it. She also agrees that this is a new country now and you’re not safe anywhere. Especially Crossgates. There’s always shit going on there. It’s just not usually at 4 pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Always be on your toes

Thanks to the climate in the country, hood rats feel empowered to take their nonsense on the road. Look at some of the videos of stuff going on. It will be near impossible to tell threat from non threat when the politicians and media get done painting targets on any "non-pocs' ". Imagine the confusion in say, Vietnam, Somalia or anywhere in the Middle East, when you are obviously not a resident or member of the community, and a good bit of the community considers you the enemy. That is coming here, very soon.

In Rochester area the mall I go to and let my kids walk around is Eastview. It's far from the city, so it's safe. It's really that simple. On the other hand anything that has a lot of bus access I pass on it.

Sorry to hear about your family going through that stuff. My daughter went through the same thing in the Clackamas town center shooting she was 21 at the time. She also had not followed through on getting her Carry permit. I as able to get her a pistol and into the class to get her CCP in a week. In Oregon it only took a week for her to get the permit and her gun was there in about the same amount of time.
The real thing she had to deal with was the PTSD from the shooting. She had a panic attack the fist time we went to the range where other shooters were and would not pull the trigger. it took me a long time to get her to pull the trigger on a live round and even more time to get her to empty a magazine. it took about two years for her to be comfortable enough to enjoy shooting again.
Just be aware both your wife and daughter will have some form of PTSD how they handle it will be up to them. You can only be supportive and help guide them through it.

Thank you all for the best wishes . They are fine, a little shaken up , and probably a little shocked. My wife dropped a pair of flip flops on the ground when they came home and my daughter jumped and was visibly startled. Not trying to be dramatic at all but this is the shit that concerns me. They are safe , seem to be okay and that’s all that matters at this point. We will carry on, just stronger.

Glad they are OK. Sadly in this climate nothing surprises me anymore nor do I think ANY place is immune from evil and mayhem. I have almost come to expect the possibility of shit getting real at a moments notice. Not saying it wouldn't effect me but I don't imagine it would impact me today as much as when I was young and naive.
