Single shot 22's

Searched and didn't find anything. Apologies if I missed anything already posted. Just looking for thoughts on an inexpensive single shot 22 that will take most if not all 22 variants. I know there are probably a lot of options both in the used and new markets. I'd like a full sized option but I am also curious about the youth sized. Would people consider small rifles like the Crickett or the Savage Rascal as viable adult options for a survival rifle?

the cricket is a pain to load .. you have to actually get the round into the chamber .. and do other crap .. close the bolt , pull the plunger or what ever its call back .. then u can shoot ..

when i was a teen .. dad had a Remington sing shot bolt 22 rifle .. this was back in the 70's .. 22lr shorts .. bird shot .. it would take it all ..
just no magnums

The first gun I ever shot was my father's Bolt Action .22 it was single shot. This thread reminded me about that.

Rossi makes a nice single shot 22 combo with 20 gauge shotgun barrel.

My son has the Rossi with .22 and 410 barrels. Its a nice little cheap gun.

I think most of the lever and pump guns will take short, long and LR.

I've been eyeing them as well. Be great little small game hunters. Specialty Pistols had a group buy at one time that all got match chambers.
They once offered one in .17cal but I'll be damned if I can find a used one anywhere.

I don't think the Chipmunk rifle is too bad considering the price. I little funky to get used to though. My mother has an old Ithaca lever .22 saddle gun. It's a single shot and shoots true. She's killed many chucks with it. Not sure what they go for used.

I haven't shot any of those. I'm not much of a wheel gun guy. That and they are pretty pricey for a rimfire revolver. I have 2 modes of thought when it comes to rimfire handguns, it's either for competition where a semi will shine, or hunting where I prefer a single shot. But that's probably because I'm not all into revolvers lol.

I had considered picking up a used single six when I bough my first handgun. They had a couple there, but I didn't want to spend that much at once. Sometimes I wish I had just bought it. Right now I have a Heritage Rough Rider single action 22 revolver and it has been reliable/durable so far.

I wouldn't hesitate to use one for that purpose. Most of them are plenty accurate and nice and compact.

22 bolt guns are great but I wouldn't worry about 22 long or 22 short. It's not like those rounds are everywhere and pretty much no one shoots them any more. Personally I don't see a legitimate use for them other than rats. Even squirrel hunting I wouldn't use them. The current crop of long rifle is much more accurate and the target loads are pretty quiet if stealth is a concern. And they are also really accurate.

For not much more money you can get into a Marlin XT22 (bolt). I love mine and the mags are cheap (I think they have a tube fed one as well). Tack driver out of the box with decent irons, I think I paid a little more than $200. I dont think you can shoot shorts through it but I have run those powderless Aguila's through it no problem. Subsonic Fiochhi is quieter than my air rifle and accurate out to 75 yards.

All of the above. Looking for inexpensive, handy and ability to shoot 22 variants. That Marlin looks to be a good choice. I've been looking at a lot of older used single shot 22's on GB and for what they are going for plus transfer and shipping fees, I might as well buy new. I like the Ruger American rimfire, but that is more than I really want to spend for this.

I don't think you can go wrong with any bolt action 22. Have you been to any LGS to see what they have in stock? I used to see a lot of used 22s but I haven't been looking in quite a while.

Even some beaters at a good price still shoot well. My Savage 7A, mag fed, probably has 100k rounds through it, was my dad's before I got it. My nephew has a Savage 76A, same gun but tube fed, was terrible looking when he got it. After some really good scrubbing and over all cleanup it shoots great.

So I ended up going the impulse buy route. As most of you have probably seen in my Ruger American Ranch thread, I ended up buying a remington 514. It was kind of funny. My dealer was on the phone with NICS for the transfer of my Ruger Ranch, when I spotted the 514. We did the transfer for the Ruger and got talking about the 22's he had in his shop. I asked about the 514 and decided "what the hell". So, not ten minutes after he did the NICS on me for the Ruger, I'm filling out another 4473 and he's back on the phone with the FBI, lol. I was thinking it would result in a delay, but nope, it went through. I have to admit it was the first time I've impulse bought a gun like that and the first time I've had two NICS checks back to back. Anyone else have similar experiences? I have to admit it felt good, going in for one gun and ending up like "F it" I'll take this one too.
In any case, it's not the best example of a 514, the bolt handle had broken off and had been welded back on. The welds need to be ground down to make them look nicer (or I could try to source another bolt) but there is just something about these rifles that makes you want to try your hand at refinishing and revamping. It's a nice little project for sure.

you had to flip down right over where the bolt handle dropped .. like shooting that rifle .. would feed shorts and longs all day long ..
no idea where it went .. wasn't there wen i took over the rifles ..

That's too bad it wasn't there when you took over his collection. It would be great to track down which model it was and find one. I thought for sure this was one of the single shots you had to chamber a round and then pull the firing pin back at the back of the bolt, but it actually resets when you open and close the bolt. And it's pre serial number too!

@ArmedCorgi .. i think it might have been the safety on that rifle , close bolt .. all set to go .. flip the tab down and shoot .. life bolt and it lifts the tab back up , pull back and eject .. .. its been a long long time since i shot it .. but that't the sequence i remember with it ..

Glad it worked out for ya, Corg. Pick ups like this are awesome. I have an old school Savage 222 I got somewhat the same way. Total out of pocket between gun and a new mag- $104 and change.

Also, just found out the code stamped on the barrel is DTT which makes September of 1948 as the date of manufacture.

I've also sourced a new bolt handle/bolt body. It's reasonably priced, but just wondering if I really need to go for it. The welding job on this one looks pretty crappy. It could be ground down to look better but I'm not sure I want to do it. You can see in the picture how crude it is, but it is functional.

I have 2 single shot .22s. I bought them not as a first rifle, but many years later just to...slow myself down? Something fun about loading a single round and not having any sort of mag. I have a Remington 510 and 514.
