I installed the SKS Magwedge scope mount today and thought I would give my first impressions. I will start by saying this is totally “bubba”, however I plan on hunting with this and my eyesight doesn’t lend well to irons.
After installing the mount i topped it with a Leupold 2-7 that I had lying around, and quickly found that I was going to have issues. The rail mount is made of aluminum, and I was finding some serious flex in the mount when pushing down on the scope. As a result, I moved the scope back as far as I comfortably could. I was hoping that it would be more ridged closer to the rear mounting pin. After moving the scope, I was still unhappy with the flex in the mount, so went ahead and shimmed between the mount and the bolt cover. After shimming, I found that the mount seemed substantially more stable.... and off to the range we went.
I set up my target at 40 yards and sighted in the scope with Winchester White Box. After getting it close enough... I went ahead and shot a 3 round group of Federal Fusion 123gr at 40 yards. The group was an embarrassing 1.5” and due to ammo shortages, that was my only group for the day. I ended my range session by shooting the fusion round into wet newspaper for expansion purposes.
Overall... I don’t think I can recommend this mount. If it was actually steel and more ridged, that might fix the flex. The magwedge scope mount cost around 70$, and for that money you would be better off having the receiver drilled and tapped for a proper mount.
I will update this thread once I take a healthy sized doe with it!
