SKS: Scout Scope or Red dot and Bayonet mount?

I recently put a Tapco Intrafuse stock on my Norinco SKS. The Tapco stock has a picatinny rail on top of the gas tube where I may be able to mount a red dot or a scout scope.

Also did:

• Chopped off 5.5 inches off the barrel to carbine length
• Sanded the cut area with 200 to 600 grit
• Re-crowned with a brass bolt using JB compound
• Shanked the barrel with an annular cutter
• Threaded the barrel 14x1 LH, mounted AK style flash hider
• Mounted an aftermarket SKS para trooper front sight

Any opinions from you guys on the optics?
Also, does anyone know of a bayonet mount that could clamp around the barrel? (more for novelty).

I'll take pictures next time I'm back in PA. Hopefully the weather will behave when I go back to the Archbald game lands range.

I don't really have much experience shooting 7.62x39 but one review I watched stated it had the same issue as .300 blackout that it drops after 200 yards. If this is the case, is a scout scope even worth it?

I doubt the gas tube is going to be stable enough for a magnified optic to hold zero at any distance the magnification would help.
I'd go with a red dot

As much as I don't want to. I think I may need to get the Choate mount. It will require drilling and tapping four screw holes into the main body for a good mount for both scope or red dot.

I'm not going to get the books out and look but I do remember that the 300BO, 7.62x39 and the 30-30 are all very close ballisticlly.

I've decided to stop being lazy and ordered the Choate scope mount. I'll have to drill and tap the holes into the body of the rifle.

The Choate mount seems to be the best and most reliable option.

I also ordered up a Magpul SL-S stock to replace the shit stock that came with the Tapco Intrafuse.

Yea, it's pretty similar to .300 Blackout, with only a few hundred (200-300 depending on load and barrel length) fps more oomph. I wouldn't consider a scope a waste if you prefer a scope to a red dot. I'd say a lower powered one like 1-6x magnification or a fixed 4x would be plenty. Great project, btw.

I think I will have to use some JB weld to fill up the spike bayonet slot. Then I can mount a picatinny rail on the bottom front for a grip.

My only issue so far is I can't adjust the dot or reticle far enough down to align with a bore sighter or front sight because the scope mount is so high.

Any suggestions?

Point the boresighter at something further away.

Your mount looks to be 1.5 to 2 inches above the bore so the bullet strike should be about that low at 25 yards. I would align for left/right and fire to find vertical.

It is just a shame to see another SKS succumb to being "Bubba'd"...

I would have liked to keep it original but the wooden stock was in very bad shape from when I purchased it. After trying to find one in good shape for a reasonable price and the only other alternative being a Boyd's, given the options a tactical build was the better route.

And bubba'ing would be a lot worse

Bubba'd mine. I see no reason not to modify and bringing a proven x39 up to today's standards. With few exceptions, sks is never going to be a big dollar rifle.

Hahaha I do agree that those are worse! As I mentioned, I do believe the OP did good work at home. Any deviation from the original on older military rifles pre 1980 is just not kosher in my book though.
