Folks I am hearing we will have a cold tough winter. Last year Buffalo got hit in a bad way and people died. We are in a situation where our grid could go down in the middle of winter. I believe everyone should have at least one good sleeping bag in a house hold. you could use it in shifts. I have been on the road at 3 in the mornings in storms. Nice to have a good bag as I have been broken down in below zero weather before.

If one watches the above video discussed is how temperature ratings were developed ... If one reads a lot of reviews the Wiggy's seem to be fairly true to the ratings. One seems to be able to survive in a wet bag

My grandpa was a mailman in rural Ohio during this time and he ended up getting caught in the blizzard during his route and his truck ended up being buried in a snow bank during it He nearly died because his truck got completely covered but he ended up being saved by the Amish family who’s yard he ended up driving into because he couldn’t see Ended up having to stay with them for a week before the roads got cleaned up enough that he could go home My grandma was so worried and my grandpa ended up walking in alive right when she was about to call their church to try to prepare for a funeral

I was a truck driver stuck in the blizzard . Pulled into a truck stop in central Ohio that evening it was probably 50 degrees. When I woke up the next morn the tires of my truck were frozen to the ground and it was near zero. The governor closed all interstates so I spent the next three days in the truck stop sleeping on the floor with dozens of other people. By the third day the restaurant was running out of food so they only served a few hours a day. Ive told my kids about this ,but Im sure they thought I made a lot of it up. 50 years later I.m still talking about it.

I have a few bags from the military. Three piece systems, they never failed me when I needed a warm place to sleep.

I have an older version of this bag. I took it with me when i drove over the road just in case. It's a little bulky and takes up a lot of space, but it didn't matter how cold it got i stayed warm with the truck off.

When my children would come home from college for Thanksgiving I changed their AWD SUV's to the winter configuration, snow tires, shovel, water, medical piss container,(funnels for the girls) diaper wipes, food, flashlights batteries, candles, matches, tarps, ....etc.
The sleeping bags I put in all of the vehicles were the old -40 XXXXL bags that you could get into with your clothes on. Sadly, Cabela's stopped making them. Remember for your sleeping bags, in the off season to store them loosely packed, let them fluff out. If you can get them to a large commercial dryer run them through it on NO Heat.
I also bought a few knee length Arctic down coats with the fur trimmed hoods XXXXL that Cabela's had on sale because they were discontinuing that line. I keep one by the back door during the winter in case the dog has to go out late. (I don't let him go out alone at night. I don't need him tasseling with something requiring a vet bill.)

My eldest wore an ankle length down coat that zippered to her ears under a fur trimmed and canvas shell ankle length down coat while she walked to school in Montreal (2 miles each way). She also had two knitted wool hats and half a dozen silk scarves wrapped around her face and throat. (Opera Singer). I remember she told me it was 38 below one morning and her nose hairs froze. It was so cold one trip home the car windows were frozen at the border and I couldn't roll them down. Border guards were not happy about me opening the door.

Don't forget about wool blankets. You can still get some of the nasty mil-surp ones fairly inexpensively. I've found deals at some of the good US millers on fancy, heavy wool blankets. Fairbult, Penelton... You have to buy what they are selling.

Even if your child goes to school down south they could be coming or going and run into a blizzard on US 81 in PA, West Virginia, Maryland etc. If you live where you can get Great Lakes storms you have to pay attention.

They just had to pick schools near Buffalo and in Montreal.
