Slide on my Ruger LCPII won’t go back

I dropped my mag today to do some dry firing practices and the mag was hard to remove and the slide won’t go back. Of course there is a round in the chamber since it’s my carry gun. I’ve done nothing to it and it goes from the safe in the holster to my hip in an IWB holster. It is the gun I carry when working and I did some gardening recently? Maybe something got stuck in there. Thoughts on how to correct this?
That’s as far back as I can get it to go and it just sticks there. I can make it go back to battery but not sure it’s good. Also last time I inserted my mag on it was hard to insert it.

Will it come out if the slides not back? I thought it needed to be back to remove the pin. I need to be careful because there’s a round in the chamber.

Ok got slide off but round seems lodged in the barrel and I can’t get the barrel out with the round in the chamber. Casing is proper to the extractor but it won’t pivot down.

Yes it can be put back forward into battery but I can’t pull the slide back to remove the round from the chamber. Haven’t taken it apart in some time and I do dry fire practicing fairly regularly.

What you can do know since you got the slide of is perhaps stick a pencil or something else not to hard that may ruin the barrel and press the slide downward against the table to dislodge the jammed round.

I can’t get the barrel out of the slide.

Yes I’d assume that. The issue is I can get the barrel to drop down because the extractor is on the casing and When I push down the extractor hits the barrel. I’m going to try to get the extractor out of the way.

I can. It’s just the extractor hits the barrel. It does move down about 1/8”.

Did you try the pencil in the barrel. It will not remove it but it may dislodge it then you can try putting the slide back on and racking it.

Got the round cleared. Barrel still won’t come out though. I manually pried the extractor back and was able to drop the barrel down low enough to remove the round. At least it’s safe now.

Thanks buddy. I was panicking a bit there. I’m puzzled as to why this would happen. Round came out easily after the extractor was off it.

Got the barrel out. The barrel at the end where it flairs is so badly rusted it wouldn’t move. I noticed a bit of rust there last night so I Gobbed oil in it. Still had to tap it with a plastic mallet. I have not been happy with how this gun has held up. I already had to recoat the slide, all the pins are rusting now the barrel. I have plenty of other guns and I’ve contributed to zero rust in them.
I think I’ll contact Ruger to see what they say.

You've got to give that poor little gun a little more attention. It sucks that its rusted, but it would have really sucked if you found out by getting a click when you hoped for a bang.

If you like the gun otherwise, maybe consider a more maintenance free coating or plating. At a minimum, more frequent cleaning and oiling. Pocket carry puts the gun in a pretty harsh environment.

I pocket carry a P3AT most days. The amount of pocket lint I find in that gun after relatively short periods is amazing.

I inspect my carry gun weekly at least but usually more because I fire it at least 3 times a week.
Im not the best at cleaning after every session but I clean at least once a week.
I carry while working our farm which can get very sweaty in the summer especially.
Then I wipe down my gun daily with an impregnated cloth.

I do take good care of it honestly. I do not fire my guns too regularly because I shoot at my parents property. I did just fire it not that long ago and noticed no issues.
I have not pocket carried this gun in probably 18 months. The slide started to rust almost immediately after purchase and I had it KG gun coated to prevent that again. I IWB kydex carry the gun and I do regularly take the gun apart to remove pocket lint as I do with my other large pistol. I do use a bit of oil occasionally while cleaning it. My other larger carry pistol has zero rust, zero issues, is older, I carried it exclusively for 2-3 years, and have many more rounds through it since it’s more comfortable to shoot. I do not feel this gun has held up very well at all. I do wear it for working around the yard and my landscaping so I’m sure I sweat while doing that but if you look there are numerous reports of this series of Ruger coating rusting. Of course people swear when they carry a gun. It’s never seen water or bad weather. It’s stored in my bedroom that’s completely climate controlled and AC run all summer. Mags aren’t rusting nor is the self defense ammo in the mags.

I contacted Ruger just now to see if they will cover it under warranty and I’m betting they say no. I do understand if they say no as a lot could make this happen. I have treated this gun like all my others and have zero issues. If they deny the warranty request the gun is a paperweight IMO and useless. I only paid $200 for it so not worth the repair quote on their web site of $110 to refinish the slide. It’s not worth fixing and paying for because the same thing will happen no matter how much care I give it. My friend works with me and has a glock .380 with zero rust issues and I know I shoot mine and clean mine more than he does. Maybe I’ll buy my first glock over this!! I have too much .380 ammo and this is my only .380 that I own.

I’d encourage a quick google search of this and see it’s a very common problem. Some rusting nearly immediately within a week of use. It’s also rusting where the gun is completely covered and not touching my skin. I get it’s a humid environment but I’ve carried cheap and expensive knives with zero care for years and never had rust issues.

I’m not saying I’m perfect and I probably could have liked it more I just don’t think it’s held up nearly as well as any of my other pistols have. It’s a cheap gun with a cheaper coating though so maybe that’s to be expected??

The lcp is a very cheap ,blued, gun. I would expect it to rust easily with any humidity, or sweat. Something like that needs to be wiped down and lubed probably on a weekly basis. Don't really think you can blame the gun.

Fair enough I don’t do that but I won’t be purchasing another one honestly. I like the gun but I don’t need another child.

I took it apart today and cleaned it up. It’s serviceable now. I took a little file to the rust on the barrel and it’s fine now. The crazy thing is it was just in one perfect little circle around the top of the barrel where the slide meets the barrel. No rust in the slide there just the barrel.

I’ll probably try to find some one to cerakote or nitride it and be done with it. I’ve never had this issue with any other firearm and I’ve been using firearms for 28 years now.

wouldn't a cerakote on it act like a rust issue too .. a build up and closing the tolerance like the rust did ? just tossing it out there .. cuz i don't know

I was thinking the same thing. There was a large pocket of rust right at the top of the barrel and slide just on about 1/3 of the barrel. Not sure how this got there. No rust anywhere else on any Internal. A bit on the slide where the coating rubbed off again and some on the pins and mag release. A quick oil and steel wool took care of that. The barrel was another matter. I had to take a file to that one section to get the rust off. Why it happened I don’t know. It sits in a kydex holster. The tolerances are tight there and I’m thinking have the KG gun coating added to that section may have contributed because it made the tolerances so tight there. I’m not sure what to do. I was thinking about it last night actually. Maybe nitride it?

Trade it in for something new. Doesnt make sense to put more money into a gun that you will always be second guessing.
