Small plaster/ sheetrock repair

Another small project for awesome NYGF member.

Cracked plaster above stairs...



Masked off safe space / dust containment area..

Cut out failing plaster used HEPA vac but still had a ton of dust (largely contained)

Replaced with sheet rock and tightened up plaster with plaster buttons.

Taped 1st coat with paper.


Second coat with fiber tape.

Skim coated with third coat of 20 min followed by 4th coat of regular compound.

Light sanding tomorrow should be good to go!

Plaster repair is dirty and not much you can do about it. Funny thing is my wife always complains about the dust. I say go for it pay some one to do it I hate doing it and you’ll still get the dust.

I absolutely HATE plaster fixing.
And I have a huge issue in our bathroom.
Not sure what happened but all of a sudden, after 15 years, the seam tape in our bathroom has decided to peel. We stopped it by using a dehumidifier during and after showers. For 15 years it was fine, then began to peel.....just the tape.
I HATE this!!!

If I was not working so much for another company, I would offer to fix that issue and guarantee a 99.9 dust free job. It is all in the technique and a proper vaccum.

We are remodeling the bathroom....and kitchen.
I am using cedar for the ceiling.
I didnt mention in the original post that there is a crawlspace under that bathroom and kitchen that had no ventilation. This Spring I layed down moisture barrier, insulated it and put in a 400 cfm fan with ducts. The peeling has stopped now.

Curious what your technique is. I used oscillating saw with vac at blade captures most of the dust at source but still some gets past it as evidenced by dust that lands on plastic sheeting. Couldnt guarantee 99.9% stayed within containment area but comfortable saying the rest of house remained clean and work area was clean when I left. I use a Festool HEPA vac.

I use a festool track saw hooked to there vacuum to cut out damage. Even put a bevel on blade if needed. Then use their planex attachment to do the sanding work. Can't remember vacuum model but it is the one for the planex. Then I have this 20 dollar hose and sanding pad holder thing to do the hand sanding. 99% of everything is extracted from the surfaces and out the door I go. Had to do ceiling repair work from water damage in a very high-end Kitchen.

Thanks their track saw is on my wish list wouldn't have thought to use it on plaster what blade do you use? The Festool vac is awesome with sanding I'm covered there.

I just use the Blade that was on the saw when purchased new. I also turn the power down on the TS 55 saw but turn vacuum power all the way up. And have a hand full of other blades for Rips and Cross Cuts. My vacuum is the
CT 36E AC. Awesome tool for working proficiently.

I have the CT36 great vac doesn't have the auto clean but haven't had any problems with filter getting clogged when combined with their bags. Were you cutting plaster or sheetrock? Would have thought plaster would kill a blade pretty quickly.

I have used it on both. The blade does not seem to care. I think the saving grace is I turn the speed down so much less heat generated. I have even used it to cut Duraock.
