Is it possible to make it a link to that month's match thread? Maybe that woukd direct additional traffic to the matches?

I could but I thought it might be nice if someone unfamilar was curious about what the banner was, clicked and was directed to that match.

To answer the question though, while it is an interesting thought, I do not believe it is possible with the software (as is) to make a banner into a link.
It is certainly 'technically' possible; I mean in the sense that parts of the delivered code could be changed to do it, but we don't have the ability to do so directly through the xenforo administrative controls or anything. It's not an available option by default is what I mean. The banner's 'controls' are actually CSS styles which are applied to the base code for them. This accounts for things like visuals and their placement, but you can't really change something coded to deliver as plaintext into a link via CSS alone. At least not with what we're working with anyway.
It's actually quite cool the way it works though. We have the ability to make completely custom CSS styling for a designated usergroup through the 'built in' administrative controls if we so choose; without having to more directly modify any core CSS files. With Xenforo there's essentially an open field to just type in style code and have it applied to certain aspects of a usergroup on the fly; as well as a very simple method to attach other CSS also right from the usergroup controls for some more complex custom things. Having spent so many years more familiar with vBulletin, there are still a few things I kind of hate in Xenforo (specifically from an administrative perspective), but for for what it lacks it makes up for 100 times over in other ways.

to answer your question: The monthly banner you earn in 2017 will remain under your screen name for the remainder of 2017. Only those who have won the banner will be eligible to shoot for the shooter of the year banner. In 2018 all monthly banners will be removed and have to be earned again. The 2017 monthly shot winners will be able to compete for the "Shooter of the Year 2017" banner which will be hung below your screen name for the entire year of 2018.
