Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22

A little background, I will be moving to Long Island from maryland in July. before I go, I would like to pick up a S&W 15-22. As far as I know, they do not make a NY compliant version. So I was thinking of getting an NJ compliant version (fixed stock, non-threaded barrel, no grenade launcher attachment) while in maryland and then putting on an AR spur or something similar to replace the pistol grip and make it NY compliant before moving. Can anyone tell me why this would not be legal or if there would be issues with this? Thanks

yeah the point of having it would be to shoot it so I don't want to strip it down. And it is like an AR (it's a .22 based on the S&W AR platform) but I don't want a fixed mag in a .22 rifle. I'd rather take off the pistol grip if I can and be able to reload mags. not having a flash hider is not a huge deal since it's a .22 and I can live with the fixed stock

no, queens is physically on Long Island, but of try and tell someone from Queens that and they will try and cut off your fun bits. Long island is 2 counties (Nassau and Suffolk) and is NOT a borough of NYC (Strong Islanders may also try and cut off those fun bits if you try and say otherwise)

Well either way I would check every I and every T before bringing anything into NYC unless you have a lawyer on retainer

Best bet stop at local FFL in the area you're moving to I'm sure they have whatever is land approved

yeah for sure. I'm likely going to do that with one of my AR builds I'm working on. I just haven't seen it for a .22 AR, although I don't know what the difference would be. Thanks

I have a fixed mag version and one with a spur. Loading the fixed mag one is an incredible PITA. Much more so than loading a fixed mag of .223. The one with the spur is great. Because of its light weight, the one with the spur isn't quite the impediment it would be on a legit AR. As well, due to the polymer lower receiver, I couldn't imagine constantly breaking it down to load it could be good for the integrity of the tabs where the receivers pivot. They do make one with a fixed stock, and no flash hider. Your FFL would just need to add the spur.

Right. Forgot you weren't here yet. It's definitely legal. Some places sell them that way here, but they're way overpriced.

A couple of FFL's sell the S&W 15/22 on LI with the "NY compliant" Thorson stock.

Your good to go with your idea. But I will make a suggestion. I like the spur a lot but it is only really functional with h the Patrick Henery trigger guard and I don't think you can swap trigger guards on the s&w. Buy it and try it if you don't like it put a thorden stock on it then.

yeah I was thinking the same thing since you definitely cannot swap the trigger guards on it. I'll probably do the spur for now and I'm putting a thorden on another build I'm doing so I can swap it over and see if i don't like the spur

Get a 10/22! Checkout Rimfire Central and see all the different builds you can make. I have never seen a S&W 15 22lr that was that accurate at any of the Appleseed shoots that I have instructed at!

fair enough, I'll probably grab a 10-22 at some point, I mean everyone should probably own one in the course of their collecting. I like the 15-22 because of the AR platform and practicing with it cheaper than a standard AR.

Bring the 15-22 to a 22 comp out at lipsa. It's a lot of fun. If I don't shoot pistol I run my old trusty mossberg 702.
