...relative to firearms and other weapons and I discovered that the laws of NY State are more screwed up that I had thought.

As I understand it:

NY Law evidently makes it a crime for a legal resident alien to possess a deadly weapon or other dangerous weapon (there is an exemption for registered firearms):

S 265.01 Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when: ...

(5) He possesses any dangerous or deadly weapon and is not a citizen of the United States; or...

If you have an unloaded firearm and at the same time have ammunition that can be fired by that gun - under NY Law it is a loaded firearm.

265.00

15. "Loaded firearm" means any firearm loaded with ammunition or any
firearm which is possessed by one who, at the same time, possesses a
quantity of ammunition which may be used to discharge such firearm.

It is illegal to own certain types of slingshots such as a Wrist Rocket (wrist-brace type slingshot).
Damn, a Wrist Rocket is such a feared weapon among NY State legislators that they do not allow you to register one in order to own it. Certainly at least one legislator who passed that law must have lost an eyeball due to negligent handling of so fearsome a weapon.

Did you know that you cannot legally dispose of a firearm without FIRST (as in before you dispose of it) notifying the proper authorities:

265.10

7. Any person, other than a wholesale dealer, or gunsmith or dealer in
firearms duly licensed pursuant to section 400.00, lawfully in
possession of a firearm, who disposes of the same without first
notifying in writing the licensing officer in the city of New York and
counties of Nassau and Suffolk and elsewhere in the state the executive
department, division of state police, Albany, is guilty of a class A misdemeanor.

What is up with that - what will be next? Will we need permission soon from mommy and daddy before we sell a gun.

Can they make them any more screwed up - you bet they can.

I don't mind the stupid laws as much as the selective enforcement of them.

Also on the books in NYS: section 5a of common law (subsection 45r) It shall be illegal to unlawfully do something legal while in the commission of activity in a legally illegal scope until such a time when the legality of said activity prove legal, even if it's already written into law as legal, pursuant to being illegal.

If you keep reading NY penal code you will come to the understanding that it is in your best interest interest to inform local, county, and state law enforcement of your days schedule in detail to make sure you are not in violation of violations and always record their approval. Once you have achieved a certain financial status you can legally adopt a fully barred attorney to live with, and travel with you, look at it like open carry, don't leave home without him. FUNY, isn't it.

I was a legal, resident alien (i had a green card) when I was first issued my pistol permit

With all due respect @Glenn B , you may have some confusion in how you're interpreting those laws.. because if I'm understanding the way you're thinking of it .. it's even weirder than you think.

When you read "Firearm" in the NY gun laws, this doesn't mean any gun. Rifles and shotguns for instance that are legal to own, and possessed by a person who can lawfully possess it, are not considered "Firearms". You don't need permission from the 'proper authorities' to cut your hunting shotgun in half.

To put it briefly, a "Firearm" is defined in the penal law as essentially a gun that isn't legal to own without an exemption. Now the strange part is that a Handgun is always a 'Firearm'.
A handgun permit is NOT actually a document that gives a person the right to own a handgun as most people think. What it actually is, is a document that grants a person an exemption from the section of NY law that bans all handguns as 'Firearms'

DEFINITION OF FIREARM AS OTHER THAN A PISTOL OR REVOLVER PENAL LAW 265.00 (3)

Any Assault weapon.

So, people tend to get that messed up in the laws, because in most cases a firearm, a rifle, and a shotgun are all different and individually defined things.

I always though get it was weird as hell that I can own a gun but a sling shot with a wrist brace is illegal. I have no explanation for that.

if i remember .. in the fireworks section .. there is a law on smoke bombs and releasing a obnoxious odor .. hence you can get arrested for FARTING ..

To put it succinctly, you are wrong in your interpretation of how I read the law. I know quite well what is considered a firearm in NY State for the purposes of the penal law I quoted. You may have been confused because I injected gun in there instead of saying firearm but that was just a generic use of the term, the law clearly states firearm and firearm is definitively described in the definitions section of the relative penal law.

Gotcha. I'd intended only to use that first line with you tagged in it as an opener to the rest of what I posted, which was intended as information for all readers and not necessarily you specifically.
