So My New Toy Came In,,,Thermal Scope

Pulsar Core RXQ30V

These are my initial thoughts after buying a bottom line thermal with a decent sensor.

I right off the bat started comparing it to my Pulsar AXION 30 Mono. The mono has more settings and just as good of a sensor.

The mono you can change through 5 or 6 different hot colors, the scope is either white hot or black hot. My initial thought when I noticed this,,,not a big deal

The clarity of the new scope is just as nice as the mono. The initial power is 1.6, which I love and it can be switched to 6.4, which I havent figured out how to do yet. Didnt do much reading, I'm still in the excitement stage.

You cant take video with the scope, like I can with the mono, which kind of sucks but I knew this before buying it. But it still bums me out.

Basically the screen is either cold black, white hot or cold white, black hot.

The mount was super simple.

The unit comes with a remote, hopefully I will find a use for it.

It has one shot zero. Take a shot, see where the shot went and adjust the x to where your bullet hit all while keeping the reticle on your bullseye.

I mounted it to my 204, I have the night vision scope mounted to the 223

I paid $1934 w/tax for the scope, the mount was included.

There are cheaper thermals out there made by ATN but the sensor quality is not as good and ATN has shitty customer service and software issues.

I will add to this post when I have more things to contribute about the scope. Right now I like it. Hopefully I will end up loving it.

Funny you bought that scope. That was the one I was going to purchase originally last fall. After doing a ton of research and finding some other predator hunters that had thermal units, I decided to go with a different scope. Although I believe the RXQ30V would have fit my needs for predators, I wound up biying a FLIR Thermosight Pro PTS 536 instead. When I finally figured out which scopes I should be comparing, it was the FLIR and two other Pulsar units, the XQ50 Trail and the XP50 Trail. It was really a choice between the FLIR and the XQ50. I chose the FLIR simply because I found a smokin' hot deal on it. Yes, the FLIR is double the price of the RXQ30V. It has a ton of different color palettes to choose from as well as a bunch of different reticles and reticle colors. For predator hunting I like the one called "Outdoor Alert" the best. Basically, it's white hot with orange being very hot. It lets you scan an area and if you see orange, you know it's an animal. Mine will take still photos with the push of a button, and will take video automatically with a shot. It captures like 20 seconds before and after each shot. I figured out how to watch the video, and can even transfer it to my tv, but I can't figure out how to transfer it to the phone so I can post it. I need a different cord to do that. OK, I'm rambling. Sorry for that. Enjoy your new toy. It's a really cool thing to play with.

My neighbors are blowing off fireworks right now. I think I'm going to go out and see what they look like in the thermal before the cops come shut down their antics.

Well already there are some things I like and dislike.

During the day the difference in color between things that were hot and things that werent were good. At night the difference between things that were hot and the things that werent was exceptional.

I could almost say the image at night was clearer than my mono but it could be because the scope low magnification is 1.6 and the mono is 4.

Really love the scope magnification starting at 1.6 and I figured out how to up the magnification. Upping the magnification doesnt blur the unit out nearly as much as with the mono. Looking through both and upping the magnification, they both are only slightly blurred on the first doubling of the zoom feature but on the second doubling the zoom feature which puts both units on max power, its really fuzzy.

Thing I dont like about the scope already and I have no idea what the hell the engineers were thinking. On the scope you cant change reticle color unless you change the hot color,,,,,,well this would be fine if you changed the hot feature to black and it didnt change the reticle color to black,,,same with white. So basically my dog was in the backyard and I scoped in on him. I changed the color to black and I said oh this kind of sweet until I put the reticle on his body and couldnt see the center of the reticle any longer,,,,,instantly I was bummed. Not worried that I would have any issues killing but just not my cup of tea. If I'm looking at a black animal give me a damn white reticle or a green or a freaking red one,,,something other than black.

Took the setup over to my buddies to sight it in but didnt,,,,I sat there and tried to teach his lab commands and the pup did great.

Did the scope come with an app,,,did you look for an app on google play?

My sightmark night vision scope, the NV mono and the Pulsar Thermal Mono will connect to any android or iphone or you can just plug a usb into the port on the unit and connect it to the computer, then my Dropbox program downloads it.

Telling you this so it could possibly give you a clue on how to do it.

As far as downloading an image from the scope, I only have a phone. No real computer. I think I would need a cord with two micro-usb plugs. The cord that came with the scope has a micro-usb that fits the scope and a regular usb. I have a cord that has a micro-usb and a HDMI which is how I can connect it to the tv.

I'm a freaking techno-dinosaur. I really don't know anything about computers or phones. I'm lucky I can post simple pictures. ( my neighbor's kid taught me how about 20 times before I got it.)

There are a few things about the FLIR I'm not crazy about, but they're ok. First, the thing eats batteries like mad - especially when it's cold. I knew that before I bought it though, so that's on me. The base power is 4X. It will then go to 8X and then to 16X. For predator hunting in a field, it's great. There are times I wish the base power was lower though. That too is on me though. They make this exact same scope with a lower base power - I just didn't buy it.

The FLIR has about 10 different reticles and you can make any of them 6 different colors. No matter which color palette you choose, there is at least 1 reticle color that will contrast it nicely. I chose a blue reticle. Against the black, white and orange it stands out great.

That is the way my Sightmark NV scope is but not the more expensive Pulsar. I'm going to dick around with it today and if I cant figure something out I plan on writing Pulsar and saying why the hell did you do that. Maybe they have some software upgrade. Thats actually what I should try first,,,usb'ing it to the computer to see if there is an upgrade.

So the scope is all sighted in now. Like normal the one shot zero took 4 shots.

Loaded the truck back up and drove to the fields out back where I normally Chuck and Deer hunt.

My woodchuck paradise might be a wasteland this year. The Food Processing Plant that leases my buddies fields arent freaking mowing. Normally they mow around their sprinkler pipes, which means they mow the whole field and sell the bailed up weeds and grasses to the farmers. They have sprinklers out there because they get rid of their waste water they use to clean the veggies before canning. It fucking smells. Grew up smelling that shit every summer.

So total Chuck kills this year out in woodchuck paradise has been one, when normally the avg is 30 or more.

Though we did see 3 nice buck that were standing at a distance of about 15ft away, they thought they were hiding. Antlers were just starting to grow,,,racks stood about 6 inches off the top of their heads but the racks were very wide. Could be the same 3 buck I see out there every summer that disappear come hunting season.

Im an idiot. Thought I tried what Pulsar sent me for instructions on how to change the reticle to white while using black hot or changing the reticle to black while using white hot. Apparently I didnt or got confused with excitement.

Anyway, I wrote Pulsar and they responded back to me in one day with the answer that I was hoping for. Excellent Customer Service and the one thing that bugged me about the scope has been changed and I am happy as shit with my purchase.

I like the FLIR scopes, but I was given a heads up about FLIR getting out of the consumer market and focusing on their Mil and LEO contracts.
That solidified my pulsar purchase.
They make auxiliary rechargeable battery paks for FLIR and Pulsar thermals.

Do you still only have eother black or white reticles or are there other options ? As long as there is enough contrast to identify the reticle from the target it shouldn't matter, but it is nice to have an offset color for the reticle.

Just black or white. There is plenty of contrast. You can adjust contrast, brightness, display icon brightness. You can change from black hot to white hot and change reticle colors between black and white.

All other high tech add ons Ive seen. My NV scope does them all,,,including pics and video. My thermal mono takes pics, video and you can change between 6 different hot colors and display colors. Actually all my mono's and scopes have every add on but this unit doesnt. It has just basic add ons and now that I know how to use it properly,,,,Im seriously happy with it. I would buy it again.

You just want to look through the XP38 scope !
But You really don't want to look through the XP38, as you'll be selling your RXQ scope to get one soon after and your wallet has already taken a beating the last few months.

I do want to look through it but Im positive I wouldnt buy it. Im very happy with the clarity of mine. The only thing that slightly bums me out is the no video. I will just have to start recording with my mono,,,then take pictures of my kills.

Not saying you would but right now would be the perfect time to come. They just mowed the grass at woodchuck paradise. Tonight,,, 6 shots, 5 kills and I was nice enough not to kill the 10 other babies I saw. I try not to kill babies because they will keep the environment populated.

Just scored 2 more properties to coyote hunt on come winter. Both properties are owned by a friend and his brother who own Thompson Builds, Inc. Thompson Builds | General Contractor | Rochester, NY | United States

Both properties are on the edge of Bergen Swamp which should make for good hunting.

My only problem now is that I have all these new toys and cant really use them for a couple of months.

So I get bored or I guess what you would call ambitious and rode the 4 wheeler over to the properties to scout them out for the best possible way to setup in them. I do this while making sure I have my survival equipment with me,,,Rohrbachs Scotch Ale

Still need to get over to the older brothers house and look at his property in Byron NY. He says they have yotes running around and that he wants me to guarantee that I will kill them. That property borders Zuber Farms property which I plan to hopefully get permission from them to Goose, Turkey and Coyote hunt their land. They own a shit ton of land all over this area,,, In Churchville, Bergen and Byron and probably in more towns,,,I just need to look more at my X-maps App. Love that App!

Lmao...I sighted in the Photon last night on my pellet gun. Took me 8 shots for the one shot zero. Although the first 4 were my dumb ass fault for going the wrong direction lol. Got it on finally but it's at the adjustment limits. Killed 3 rats last night and another today.

Im sure you dont even realize how much better that scope would work with a aftermarket IR light. Though the OEM one does seem to work well for distances in the 100yd range.

My aftermarket light made my scope focus better,,,,

It's only sighted in for 20' or so, where I'm shooting rats at I'm close to the action.
So far I love the Photon. Only thing I don't care for is the record button on the back of the IR. Kinda pain in the ass, I only record when I'm about ready to shoot. I'd like to find a way to have a remote.
Before coyote season starts I want to get a better IR. For now this one is ok. Especially seems I'm shooting really close range lol.

Shouldn't be an issue but I haven't deleted any of the old content, kinda sucks you can't do that from the menu. I'll download the rat kills to my PC tonight then delete everything. My main reason for only recording the kills is to conserve battery life. I still don't have a external battery pack.

As far as deleting stuff,,,,a phone or a tablet will wifi to the scope if you have the Streamvision app and you can delete from there

Finally found where I can delete content from the scope but I'll be damned if I can get the fuckin thing to connect to my PC. Apparently Linux isn't detecting it, which hasn't ever happened with anything else I've connected.

There is a special way the computer will detect it. Have it hooked up then turn on the scope or have the scope on then plug it in. I cant remember what works but I had the same issues with windows.

Do you have the Streamvision App because there is a firmware update for your scope and my thermal mono. Came out yesterday.

I updated both of the above mentioned devices but didnt mess around with stuff to see if there was a difference

Streamvision was setup for both Sightmark and Pulsar products.

Yep, I got a notification on my phone about the firmware update. To my surprise the app updated the scope when it connected. No playing games bullshit like ATN lol.
I didn't see any differences at the scope or app, although there may be differences in the ballistics part of the app. I didn't both looking there as I'm not ready to try that part out.
The scope end though looks unchanged.
