The whole process was a pain in the balls. But it is worth it to me to not be risking a felony. My other half lives in NH, right on the MA border. We literally pass through MA to get from one side of town to the other.

Yes, it’s only good for one year at a time.
And it was issued with no restrictions.

I try to stay as far away from Long Island as possible, but family obligations occasionally take me there. I reside in the Finger Lakes region.

There are three types of firearms permits in Massachusetts: the Firearms ID Card (FID), the License to Carry Class A, and the License to Carry Class B.

The FID allows you to purchase, possess, and transport "non-large-capacity" shotguns and rifles, as well as ammunition.
The Class B allows you to purchase , possess, and transport "large capacity" rifles and shotguns, and "non-large-capacity" handguns, as well as mags and ammunition.
The Class A allows you to purchase, possess, and transport "large capacity" rifles and shotguns, and "large capacity" handguns, as well as mags and ammunition.

In Massachusetts, A "large-capacity" firearm is defined as a semi-automatic handgun or rifle that is capable of accepting more than ten rounds, OR is a semi-automatic shotgun capable of accepting more than five shotgun shells, OR is an assault weapon. A rifle with a fixed tubular magazine designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber ammunition is not a large-capacity firearm.

So a "Non-resident Class A Large Capacity Temporary License To Carry Firearms" allows a non-resident to carry any firearm that is legal to possess in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, anywhere is is legal to do so.

The dangerous thing about even knowing the law, is that LEO's typically do not.

Bob is very smart to get a Non-Resident MA License. One glance at that by the local LEO could make an enormous difference.

And please note that the Mass Link implies (at least to me) that Magazines that can contain over ten rounds are legal. They are not.

The fact that the magazine CAN contain more than 10 rounds makes it illegal; even if the owner has only inserted 10 or less.

Now there is much discussion as to whether Magazines than can contain more than 10 rounds are legal if they are PRE-BAN (I forget the cut-off date).

Still, the bottom line is getting arrested and being in the right is only slightly better than being arrested and being wrong.

Any arrest is a excellent excuse for being refused your License next time your renewal rolls around.

The Massachusetts non-resident license is valid for one year, whereas the resident license is valid for 5-ish years.

It’s all good.
There are some pretty good threads about this very subject on the NE Shooters forum. Several of them were quite helpful for me. I might suggest checking them out. General consensus is to avoid the “its my right” type of reasons.

I use “for all lawful purposes” on my MA application. There are a few towns that on their permit application state you cannot use all lawful purposes as a reason, but this phrase is generally used.
