So I finished making my steel target setup last week and wanted to try it out but living in the city it's not recommended to do so in my backyard lol. The closest place I could think of to shoot was the Alabama swamps which is a little bit of a drive for me. Loaded up the gear and headed out Sunday. Figured a little later in the day and being wet like a drizzle rain it shouldn't be crowded. Well there are only 4 spots and all taken up with people and tables ( rifles ). We drove around to see if there were other spots and couldn't find any. Very discouraging to attempt again. I posted this in hopes of any suggestions. I don't belong to any gun clubs and not sure if there is any in my area that would allow for steel targets to be used and setup. Blasdell isn't accepting members but can try in Feb. Tonawanda is really pricey and not sure if either would allow personal steel targets. I heard Eden might, but didn't verify. Open for suggestions

You can't start to shoot at the swamps until noon...it's always packed there. No joke, if you want a spot to shoot you have to get there by 9:30 or 10am......then be prepared to have a bunch a people bother you by constantly asking to share your spot or asking how long you'll be. Happens to me all the time... I bring steel out there too. I set up a bunch of close in steel for handguns and 2 gongs for rifles.

Wow , that's horrible. I thought for sure on a shitty wet day it would of been ok. How about 10 am on the week day. I work a second shift and didn't know if 12pm was just the norm or neighbors gonna flip out, or maybe it's enforced. Looks like a local club or maybe buy a small chunk of land and have a nice sanctuary out of the city for shooting and camping might have to happen lol

That sounds like crap. They need more spots. The lack of public shooting spots in the state is a PITA, at least near buffalo or rochester.

I had a lane there once and an ol work buddy drove by in a big white van and recognized me. he asked if if he could shoot with me, I said yeah come on, He was younger than me , and left to go fight in Afghanistan , He parked the truck and nearly a squad of Airborne soldiers all pile out of the van.lol. They had gotten back about a month ago. What can I say? But we all had a good time and fired off thousands of rounds. I had a 308 AR-10 they had a great time with. I met some cool people by sharing range , get to shoot their weapons , I don't mind it .

My friend got a purple hart when a 12 year old kid threw a grenade at his hummer ,he was standing next to it with the door open . The grenade went off on the other side of the glass , at face level, which would have killed him, But his hand was exposed it got shredded pretty bad . I asked if he had at least killed the kid and he said no, I said Ahhhh your getting soft.;)

That sounds like a great story "holdover" about sharing and a lucky story about your friend surviving something that could of ended up very tragic! Sharing a spot I think is great as long as rifles with rifles and pistols with pistols. Even if both have both. Mixed long and short range together in the same area would make me feel uncomfortable. Another thing that worries me is if a stranger approached and wanted to shoot how safe are they?
