Speaking of woodchucks...

After years of being just goldenrod, the field behind my house has been planted with oats and I understand the plan is to put in winter wheat later on. Will either of these crops attract woodchucks? Just wondering if it would be worthwhile to take a walk back there with a rifle.

It's always worth going for a walk with your rifle. To your question I doubt the new crops will attract any more chucks than the golden rod.

Once I glanced out the slider an saw a brown blob between the spindles of the deck railing. There was a woodchuck laying there looking out over the scenery. Mind you he climbed 15 steps up to get on the deck. I guess chucks can and do climb but not much.

My dad smacked one over the head that was sitting on top of a fence post. I've also heard about them being on top of the big round hay bails.

I would never have expected a woodchuck up on the deck, but there it was chilling out. All it needed was a cigar and a boubon. They can be a pain though. I've had several set up shop under retaining walls and in drains. Young ones spreading out. At least they don't do the damage that the 'effing rabbits do. I just got done trapping out the chipmunk population too.

Turns out they're not much interested in oats, but this year it's soybeans and there are a few chucks out there. Only got two in the field so far, but I got four that were commuting across my back lawn.

Pour gas in the hole, wait about 10 seconds and then toss in a match.Waiting the 10 secs lets the fumes sink to the lowest chamber.Smoke bombs are no good cause the fucker just goes down deeper as the smoke rises out of the hole.

It's under a bay window overhang and right up against the foundation. No gas! I would light the smoke bomb which is poison and then seal off the hole with plywood or something. Is it going to smell or anything if I then just fill back in the hole?

Put a piece of hose on pipe and clamped it. Ran the hose into the hole and stuffed rags around it guttentight... Ran the mower and went about my business. Mower ran out of gas in about 1/2 hr. Removed hose & rags and filled hole with dirt. End of story...

Surprisingly no smell at all. Slab was the reinforced type with the sides about 12" deep. No idea how deep he was in there.

I don't know of any. I knew he was in as I watched him go in. Are you sure there are no other holes?

I think there is a smaller secondary hole.

Block it up and monitor if you suspect it to be an active hole.

Try some kids smoke bombs down the hole and then block it up and watch for leaks.

Would technically be legal based on distances but probably not doable. Truly they look kinda cute so until I see damage I just watch them.

They usually have 2 to 4 holes per.One time we did the gas thing in a hole and the girl in the cabin about 50 yds away showed up and opened her cabin and it reeked of gasoline,secondary hole was under there.Oops.

Last summer i help my friend dispatch 18 chucks of all sizes and shapes. This summer we pulled out the falling retaining wall they ruined.
There is still one wiley bastard, but he moved to underneath an old cement slab.

Yup, we got one again....mowed down all wifey's hostas, she's pissed. He's a big ole fat one too, pork roast with legs.

We have one that lives under the shed. Harmless bugger (here). Watch him scamper up and down the driveway sometimes.

I like ours--the one close to the house, and it has a name. One or two in particular are always at the top of the street going across doing who knows what. The weird thing about them is holy shit are they scared little animals.

You could be the first human a deer has ever seen in the middle of the ADK and it wouldn't act like these things. They somehow--constantly--see me even from 50 feet away when I move slightly behind a glass window. Their vision for movement is insane and they immediate scamper off.
