GUNSICK
6.5 Creedmoor
I don't think I would have the patience for it.
I know spear guns are illegal here.I would like to spear fish, but I don't think you can in nys.

The response I give people who say primitive ways of hunting are the best ways is this,Lends new meaning to 'primative' season. Not my style, don't climb trees any more, and prefer firearms.
I've had a traditional recurve for a few years now, I haven't hunted deer with it yet because I feel I need more practice still. If someone is proficient with a weapon and are confident it really shouldn't matter to you. The man made a lethal hit, the animal was recovered. That man was successful with a spear. Because you think it's barbaric or it will outrage your BIL really shouldn't matter. Don't watch the video if you don't like the idea....keep in mind there are plenty of deer shot and wounded during firearms season. Possibly more in my mind then archery.

If people back then had the option, 100% of them would choose guns. Their spear, atlatl, primitive bow argument doesnt hold water.
Use to spear fish suckers legally as a teenager. Walking through a creek at night with a lantern in one hand and a spear in the other. I remember it being a hell of alot of fun. We would come home with bags of them for this old lady that use to make fried fish balls with them. I think I remember doing it off townline rd or something like that in Hilton or Hamlin. I would have to ask the guy who owns woodchuck paradise,,,his father use to take us before he passed.
That was my point.Of course they would choose firearms. They depended on that meat for survival. Now, that's not really the case with the vast majority of us. Most hunters spend more money on hunting than if they just bought the meat in the store. If you argue that someone should use the best tool for the quarry, then you should be arguing against all bows, muzzleloaders, shotguns, slingshots, and anything else that isn't a rifle of significant caliber for the game you're after. Personally, I don't know if I could ever be proficient enough with a spear to be comfortable taking game. That doesn't mean that someone else hasn't spent the necessary time though.
That was my point.
Ive killed a rabbit with a stick. I actually like alternative weapons for hunting.
The problem is, like you said, most people are not proficient enough with spears, slingshots and such to make a clean, humane kill.
Ive shot longbow for 40 of my 45 years, also atlatl and slingshot(real slingshot, with a sling) for 25 years. Im very confident with all three on smsll game but prefer more modern gear for large game.
I watched a guy spear hunting on Pursuit channel awhile ago. He was hunting wild hogs. He is purported to be a "professional" spear hunter. He speared a hog from 20 feet. The hog threw the spear, so the guy stalked the heavily bleeding animal for another 45 minutes. He found the pig laying in a stream. He threw another spear in the pigs shoulder from above. The pig jumped up and ran until it got tangled in some branches. The guy walked up and cut its throat.......professional indeed I thought.
Alot of the throwing weapons are meant to bleed the animal to death, or slowly poison them.
If thats your thing cool, but I hunt for food, not sport.
Not sure, ill try to find it.Think I seen that one, was it Tim Wells with Cold Steel Spear I think?
