.308 Win
Lokking at a M1A standard. Anyone have one? Good rifle? Any problems? Any advice would be appreciated.

When you say standard, do you mean the 22" non-scout version? I have been eyeing an 18" scout that Impact guns has. They are pricey. Friend has one and he says it eats lots of different ammo with no issues.
SA does offer some NY compliant models, and for those that aren't, Smith Enterprises offers a replacement muzzle device for under a hundred bucks. I am a big fan of the M1A's grandfather, the M1 Garand, however between costs of ammunition and the Rifles themselves, the M1A becomes much more appealing, it IS more accurate, reliable, and can easily be scoped it you so desire, I would avoid the SOCOM and Tanker model as the muzzle blast is vicious and deafening, which often leads to their resale. Magazines (5 & 10) are ~$40 for genuine SA (avoid that cheap reproduction magazines) I have fired lots of NATO surplus as well as conventional .308 all without issue, just keep in mind that "Custom" barreled rifles MIGHT be reamed for .308 Winchester which IS ~.003" shorter than 7.62x51 NATO: Some rifles eat it without a hiccup, others are fussy. YMMV.

I've had a few over the years. Rock solid rifle. My 1st one was a super match. It shot MOA with ease with good ammo. It really liked Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. Loaded with a 20rnd mag it was a bit on the heavy side. The standard model (9102) won't be as accurate with Nato spec 7.62, but still good enough.

Have 2 M1As in 308 and an LRB M25 in 6.5 CM. It is possible to get them to shoot MOA consistently, but it takes some investment to do it. They were built to shoot 2-3 MOA. My dad carried an M14 in Vietnam so I got an M1A. After my 2nd tour in Afghanistan I bought the LRB. The LRB does shoot sub MOA with my reloads, but I have about $6K (without optics) into that gun.
I do like the M1 Garand and M14 design, they are great guns and IMO every serious shooter needs to have one in their stable.

I'm a huge fan of mine (NY Compliant 18” Scout Squad). Used some camo tape and those old ACU kneepad inserts to make a cheek riser for it, will eventually get a Leupold VX-Freedom IER scope for it. Honestly I'd say it's the best NY legal option.

What is to be expected of a .308. Barrel length helps obviously. Wouldn't want to go shorter than 18 though
The M1A is a heavy rifle so shooting the standard loads shouldn’t be a problem for you. The but plate is steel though so no rubber coated cushion on your body to reduce the felt recoil. I load 168s for mine but the 150s or milsurp 147s do just fine.

I don't believe they do. Smith Enterprises makes a "muzzle device" that the brake can be swapped out for. But honestly you're better off getting the NY compliant Scout Squad.
I have a pre-ban (not that it really matters here) that was built with mostly TRW parts and a second one built by Ted Brown on a SA receiver that's mostly SA parts. Using the currently supplied steel scope mount, the bitch will shoot pretty well!
Down side to these rifles as well as others using a detachable Box Magazine is the bad habit of resting the Rifle on the magazine. (negated by using the 5 or 10 rounder) Garand doesn't suffer this, and in combat when you're trying to get as deep in the dirt as you can without going under, one really appreciates that.

My M1A Socom is a NYS compliant model.
There's a maglatch that fixes the mag in place to make it a toploader.i use those because I need smith vortex flash eliminators on all 4 of mine.they are also super easy to top load.i got two loaded models then got a scout.loved it so much I got another scout.be careful,it's easy to get addicted to the m14 platform.lots of upgrades to accurize them too.i harvest all my deer with a scout.the full size barrels are just too long for my hunting blind.18 inch is perfect imho.

I have 2 22' NYS compliant M!A's. trying to get one decked out with optics (ongoing project). The other I shoot with the factory iron sights, with my 72 year old eyes and shooting glasses I regularly ring 8" steel at 125m. The rifle shoots so much better than I do!!
