I sincerely love late squirrel season. The lack of foliage and snow cover make it difficult for the varmints to hide. You can pick a comfortable place to camp and shoot them from a distance.

My favorite rifle for this is my Savage 39R17 17HMR. The weather this morning was relatively mild. But, the late sunrise meant only about an hour in the woods. I was able to bag one. I used 17gr. Federal TNT HP. They are super accurate in this rifle, but are kind of messy.

Three years ago today, I had a cardiac catheterization . It was a life-saving operation that changed me. I spent post Christmas and early January recovering. Squirrel hunting was the first activity to get me out of the house. It was great therapy.

I’m heading out tomorrow with my son and my buddy and his son. I’ll be the shotgunner and they r bringing 22s. Next season, my 22 should be sighted in.

Head shots are chancy at ranges greater than 50 yards. That squirrel noggin is tiny. I suppose clean miss is better than a messy kill.

i agree that head shots are hard. I love to eat squirrel. I’d rather miss than destroy the little bit of meat that I could enjoy.

They taste like chicken to me. The meat is denser than chicken though. Not chewy or dried out just the muscles strands are tighter??

Par boil it and let it sit in the fridge overnight. Then cook it the way you like, fry, deep fry, bake, BBQ, its all good.

This is what I do, tried just frying it up but it comes are really chewy. Boil and BBQ it on the grill comes out good.

Made squirrel and dumplings in the Crock-Pot and probably won't do it again just because all the bones I missed.

My 93 prefers the 20 g. , if you havn't yet give them a try.

I was on my way to filling my bag when three other hunters and a dog showed up and cleared out the 2 squirrels I was tracking.

The Crosman 1377 gets the assist.
