The officer, Katlyn Alix, 24, was in the living room of the home of another officer who was on duty but home just before 1 a.m. when he “mishandled a firearm and shot (Alix) in the chest,” police said in a written statement Thursday morning.

Police Chief John Hayden said two male officers who were on duty went to one of their homes during their shift. Alix, who was off duty, stopped by and was shot in what Hayden called the “accidental discharge of a weapon.”

The officers then rushed Alix to the hospital, calling police dispatch to report the shooting as they drove. Alix was pronounced dead at St. Louis University Hospital.

She was killed with a revolver, not a department weapon, according to a police source. Alix and the two on-duty male officers were close and often worked together, the source said.

A gun was recovered by investigators at the scene. There was no word on why the officers were all at an officer’s home while two of them were on duty, when policy requires them to be patrolling in their assigned district. It’s not clear who owned the weapon. Hayden would not say how many shots had been fired, how many times Alix had been shot nor whether anyone was in custody.

“All that will be part of the investigation,” he said in response to questions at an early morning press conference.

The other officers were not injured in the shooting, but the officer who fired the gun at Alix was hospitalized Thursday morning after delivering Alix to the hospital, a source close to the investigation said. The department has not confirmed his status, and it wasn’t clear why he was hospitalized.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner’s office tweeted that a prosecutor and two of her investigators had gone to the scene and had opened an investigation into the shooting. About 3:15 p.m., Gardner released a statement saying she had asked the Missouri Highway Patrol to assist with the investigation.

“This is a tragic situation,” Gardner said. “The family of Officer Alix deserves a complete, objective and thorough investigation of this incident. My office is approaching this criminal investigation with the highest level of seriousness
Hayden, meanwhile, praised Alix in a statement released to the media.

“Officer Alix was an enthusiastic and energetic young woman with a bright future ahead of her,” Hayden said in an emailed statement released Thursday. “On behalf of the Metropolitan Police Department, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Alix family during this extremely difficult time. I ask the St. Louis community to keep the Alix family and the entire Metropolitan Police Department in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn this tragic loss.”

Alix joined the St. Louis Police Academy in June 2016 and graduated in January 2017. She had served in the Sixth District, and at the time of her death she was assigned to the Second District as a patrol officer.

She is survived by her husband, mother, father and sister, the department said. She married a fellow St. Louis police officer in October. He was not among those at the home when she was shot, according to multiple sources.

Won't be the first time that someone knew something and didn't want to go along with the program and became a liability not all who take an oath are squeaky clean sometimes it doesn't happen in the movie's only o_O Hopefully it was just a stupid game and not something that would bring more pain and disgrace to the family's and their department :(

Alix, who was off duty, went to Hendren’s home in the 700 block of Dover Street in the Carondelet neighborhood.

Hendren and his partner were working a late shift Wednesday and attended roll call at their station along Sublette Avenue, a source said. Investigators believe that shortly after roll call, they went to Hendren’s house, a source told the Post-Dispatch.

The house is about two miles from the southeastern border of the district they were supposed to be patrolling. Under department policy, on-duty officers are required to remain in their assigned districts at all times.

Officers are required to “constantly patrol his/her beat, except when on special assignments and shall not lounge, loaf or gather with others at any place,” according to the “Responsibilities of the District Police Officers” section of the police manual.

At some point, Alix arrived at the house. She was off duty. The partner told investigators that he told Hendren and Alix they should not be playing with guns, and reminded them they were police officers. He said he didn’t want any part of it and started to leave, but before he got outside, he heard a shot.

Hendren and his partner reported the shooting on their police radios at 12:56 a.m. Thursday and loaded Alix into their police department SUV, taking her to the hospital.

At the hospital, Hendren head-butted the back windshield of a police SUV parked nearby, breaking it, sources said. He suffered minor injuries to his head, and remained hospitalized, sources said.

The police department refused to confirm that Hendren was hospitalized, how the window to the SUV was shattered or any other details about the case. Chief John Hayden said in a five-minute news conference early Thursday that the department believed it was “accidental,” but has not elaborated. In a news release issued later Thursday, the department wrote that the officer “mishandled” the weapon.

Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards said Friday that Hayden’s statement was based on the information they had initially. Hayden, he said, had been “very forthright in terms of transparency and accountability, but these situations oftentimes change and when investigations are done, these situations will change, it’s been very fluid.”


Alix decides she wants to play Russian roulette at 1 o'clock in the morning with two on duty officers who also wanted to play ? Im sure her father is very proud of her. She died a whores death.

Please! Don't tell me any professional investigator is buying this pile of BS as what actually happened. If it did happen as stated, gross negligence, send the fuck to jail for 10-15 years.

Better still have him spin the cylinder once and pull the trigger 5 times on a six shooter.

This is where thise laws that convict everyone involved should be in place.

Both cops should be charged with manslaughter or murder. The cop without the gun should have stopped that behavior. He did not so he should be charged as well.

Play stupid games.....

Yes, the story about them playing Russian Roulette does sound much too unbelievable to accept as truth without a lot of supporting evidence and without a thorough investigation. Time will tell though it it is the truth or not. Lots of things we can imagine that may have happened - hopefully the investigators will uncover the truth.

Either he's lying and he simply tried to kill her, or what they really did play it in which he will go to prison anyway, albeit for less.

I'm finding it mighty hard to believe that TWO people not under the influence of drugs, who were otherwise competent enough to be police officers, decided to play russian roulette like this. Unless they thought it was fun because the vests would stop the bullet?
