Stair retread project... well sort of...

Well supposed to be anyway lol...

Got there lower stairs treads looked like this...



Wanted to make them look like upper stair treads...



Pulled carpet and guess what... Oak treads with a shit-ton of upholstery staples....



Good news for NYGF member!

So project turned into restoration/refinishing...

Got staples pulled (three hours arrgh), treads sanded and a coat of paint on the stringers and risers....


Caulk and repaint tomorrow and filling staple holes polyurethane treads tomorrow...

Fixed the sheetrock and will repaint walls while I was at it lol...

Thanks! Turns out refinishing them was harder than it would have been retreading them lol but they came out nice. I filled all the staple holes and pores with wood fill and had to sand them again. Some of the staples were rusted and left some black marks but I think it adds character

The pros charge an arm and a leg for this. When I asked a guy a few years back it was $50/tread. That was no filling, no painting the risers, no removal of nothing. That was just sanding and two coats of poly and they were at my house for another project too so I’m sure that lessened the cost.
