Been getting emails / notifications recently that Starlink is starting to open up for NY areas. I think there were a few people on the forum who were waiting for it so they could ditch their providers or give it a shot.

Anyway, figured I'd let people know for those that were waiting on it. Starlink

Ya I got me email notice a couple weeks ago. About 15 minutes later the wife sent me a picture of the spectrum people at our pole. Still don't have internet yet but I'm thinking within a month we will. I'm surprised they started running the fiber in our area early last September and still haven't hooked people up. You would think that they would have a rolling system setup to recoup the money faster.

Yes, for some on the outter reaches or beyond the reach of civilization, this will be a boon. But like Google's zepplins and other weird proposals... Just a big no! Especially to this.

And for the matter, as an old Satellite TV user, be ready for no service when you need it most, like big storm/stay at home days, lol.

The problem is you don't have to be too far out in the boonies to not have internet. I live on the same road the local high school is. Less that 5 minutes from SUNY Morrisville and on a moderately traveled road. With all of that said we don't even have DSL available. The only option we have is cellular internet which is terrible. So for me this is a big deal. I just lucked out that they cable gods finally decided to run fiber my way.

Everything I've read and seen with the system is positive. I also think it will keep improving with more satellites and more ground stations. I really thought this was going to be my only option until last September when the started running fiber optic in the area. I'm a little disappointed that I don't get play with the new technology. As it stands right now hard line is still superior so with that becoming available to me shortly I'm going that route.

This works very very differently than satellite TV, or the other satellite internet systems.

For one thing, these satellites are -350 miles up, and the satellite TV (and other satellite internet) ones are -22,500 miles up.

So being more than 50 times closer to the satellite is a huge difference that eliminates most of then drawbacks of the old systems.

They also use very different frequencies with different propagation properties.

This will never compete with fiber to the home in dense urban areas, but it is a game changer for anyone who lives farther out than the suburbs.

I understand what it is... I just don't like it, I don't like the space noise and I don't like the company either! So triple whammy!

I always think choice is a good thing. I'm not willing to adopt it until I am sure it's stable and reliable and become less expensive . Like it or not it's probably the future.

We have Frontier bonded DSL. On a good day we get 12mbps down/1mbps up. For years it was cheap and we delt with it ($59.95/mo). Over the passed 2 years it has steadily been increasing. The latest bill it was $84.95, for the same shit service! I thank the increase on Hochul since the company is forced to provide internet to low income trash for $15/mo...guess who is picking up the tab for that?

Anyway, we don't have fiber or cable, let alone any other option for a different provider. I foresee Frontier continuing to increase their rates. I am seriously considering Starlink. The $35 more per month is worth it considering it will be 10x faster than the shit I have now.

I seen it for sale at bass pro for $499. Is it $100 per month? Or you can buy it as a one time rate? I heard nothing but good things

We just got Starlink on sale for $299 and $100 off first month; it replaced frontier DSL. Was maxed out at 12mbs. Now we are getting between 60 and 450 mbs. We also replace our land line with Ooma. So our $150 bill (dsl & landline) dropped down to $126 a month.

Sounds like you were in the same boat as me. Where was the sale? Is it still going on?

I think it runs until the end of October. Still cost about $400 with mount, shipping and tax.

Yea I tried that. I called to bitch about the insane jacked up pricing and the lady said "Wait... fiber may be available in your area". Well 3 days later I get a call from a local engineer that said it wasn't available on my road. He said it is on the adjoining county road, but they don't do trunk line runs. He said I need to wait for more grants from the rural connectivity program. Funny thing is the contractor that was up here installing fiber got terminated for milking the program out of tens of thousands of dollars. No one replaced them in 2 years so I won't hold my breath on ever getting it. Maybe Kamala needs to blow (shes good at that) another $42 billion on connecting rural areas.

Spectrum is also down on the county road. Dealt wit them some years back. They wanted $6,500 to run cable lines a mile down the road to the nearest pole. Told they to shove it.
