but the only gun i have that has committed a assault is my single shot break open 20ga when it fell out of the roof rack and hit me in the head at a stop sign ..

Ok, so question on this. Say you had a registered weapon and decided that you don't want to recert. Do you have to let them know that you made it compliant, or just let the registration lapse?
There is a process for this but I forgot how to do it. It would be the same as if you sold the gun out of state. I would NOT let it lapse.

So you're saying either register or make it compliant before it lapses. You're not saying, "Don't NOT register it again." - correct?
I am saying either register it as an AW or file the amendment that says it was made compliant. Don't do nothing.

Make sure you do your paperwork; the entire job of the SAFE unit at the NYSP is to catch people who forget to re-register and confiscate their evil weapons for destruction. They will think you are such a person and will be excited to drop in, which puts you in the position of explaining them out of your life.

If the registrant lets it lapse, I'm pretty sure they'll get in contact with him eventually when they find out. It's not like they are going to assume that the registrant made modifications. As it is according to the law if you sell it, you have to provide proof that you sold it just like a handgun.
If it were me, I'd saw lower in half, tell them that I destroyed it and provide whatever proof they required for that. Then I would buy another cheap 40 to 50 dollar lower and put it back together again with the same upper and the rest of the parts.
Otherwise, they'll always know that you have it in a modified version.

Thanks for the tips. I figured you don't just sit there and wait, so thanks for those links. It's for my dad, he registered his first. Bought a 2nd, but hasn't put it together yet or done anything else. I'll be talking to him tonight and telling him about this.

I would sell it. I would then notify them and completely clear myself of that scourge. Then I would take the money and build or buy one that doesn't require registration. Even if I had to take a little loss, but, thats just me.
