Since the article is so vague, with a violation of the NYS VTL and an MVA, does it give the officers cause to search the person's vehicle?

This is based upon IF he wasn't not under the influence or suspected of the afore mentioned.

Per the NYSP press release, they found the first "unserialized" handgun sometime after his crash on July 18th, and caught him with another one after stopping him for a traffic violation on the 31st. A dumb ass, obviously.

I expect that they found the first one when "inventorying" his car after the crash. IMHO, that is just a bullshit way around getting permission to search a person's vehicle. Not saying he isn't necessarily a scumbag, - just that I don't agree with the "inventorying" crap that we see happening more and more.

Except when you're the guy who's at the other end of Internal Affairs investigation or criminal investigation by the DA, after said scumbag claims he had a couple of grand inside said vehicle before he left by ambulance, that you failed to inventory before the tow company took possession.

I can see this other side of the argument. Not sure what a good solution is (other than being 100% legal, of course!).

Part of the problem, is where do we draw the line? Inventorying and finding a joint in the closed glove box, or a dead murder victim’s body cut up, and sealed in plastic bags in the trunk? Or, - what if there is a small safe bolted to the floor of the vehicle? Should they be allowed to crack it open when there is no suspicion of a crime, but later during inventorying the car? Or should they have to get a warrant?

I don’t have all of the answers. But I don’t like what I have seen in some different videos.

And as for having an “unserialized” (P80 or other so called “ghost gun”)? Hell, if he was not otherwise prohibited from owning and having one (which is the case in something like 40 other states), he should not be jammed up over having one just because he is in NY. SCOTUS needs to rule on VanDerStock v Garland,- and soon.

Are you saying that everythin in a vehicle always makes its way onto the inventory list before it disappears ? I'm ☆☆SURE☆☆ that every badge is a 100% honest upstanding citizen that would NEVER steal anything or violate anyone's rights !

Marijuana is legal nowadays, so guess you would treat like OTC meds. Body parts in the trunk would make it a crime scene. Safe in the car that's bolted down, if crime suspected get a warrant, if not, probably best to voucher it for safekeeping.
