Basically, and in toto, "civilization as we know it" can not run on extremely flawed tech like solar and wind.

As a "top up" to water, nuclear and other methods (gas and coal) of electrical generation it's mildly feasible.

And even that's "pie in the sky" given the fact that the fUSA possesses little of the necessary infrastructure, or natural resources to build such a system.

It is all relative. I prefer to see a wind and solar farm than long chimney stacks. The issue is what to do when the wind stops or it is snowing.
Why we need modern nuclear back ASAP.

My issue with the solar farms is they are slowly taking up farmland. Not a big deal right now but we might want that farmland for producing food at some point. Whether that be for a growing population or the need to increase our food security in this country. And restoring the land isn’t an overnight process. I think if solar farms are going to put up they should not be on good farmland. I’m big believer in property rights and within reason you should be able to do as you wish with your land but I think we might be slowly shooting ourselves in the foot on this one. I also tend to think solar farms are ugly. We have one going up in town that is the biggest clusterfuck. About 6 months behind schedule, bunch of equipment was installed incorrectly, they didn’t put up natural barriers for nearby homes like they said they would. And the landowner will probably be dead in 5 years so he doesn’t care.

The place to put them is in the desert or next to highways like the germans are doing. Even on top of water channels save water by preventing evaporation and might collect rain water too.

Housing developments are a bigger threat to farmland here in the HV

100% right in many places. Urban sprawl is a much bigger threat to farmland overall than solar farms. Solar farms are just the new threat and are being put onto farmland that would probably never be housing. Or at least not in the near future.

I don’t get the whole housing development because all I hear is how the birth rate is dropping. When the baby boomers die off there will be a glut of housing.
In the area north of me the big threat is solar. They are offering $2,000/acre for solar and I’m sure it will increase. Many retired farmer rent the land for taxes plus a bit here so they make way more leasing to the solar farms at $2,000\acre. There are no jobs and it’s an hour or so to Buffalo for them so housing developments are not desirable there.

Just watched them build a 10 acre solar farm about a mile from me. Just pounded metal posts into the ground and mounted the panels. That could be reclaimed a heck of a lot easier than a 10 unit development … not being argumentative just sayin.

I’d like it on my house but not until it makes sense. AFAIK the only people with solar now got suckered into some twenty year lease deal from a solar company. Even covering my entire south roof would only give me 50% max of my electricity usage. But until I can get the entire array installed for $7k all in or less it’s a waste of time.

When I moved to NY they had this thing where you can choose on the free market for your energy supply. For the life of me I could not make heads or tails of it. I looked at various company's offerings and they were all very opaque. I could not ever figure out what the actual real damn cost was going to be long term and how to compare it to RGE.

Eventually it turned out many of these companies were playing fast and loose, which made me feel a lot better about the fact I couldn't see any benefit to it. I think the only point to any of these alternate supplies is if you're willing to actively pay more money for "green". Some are (I'm not). Until it's cheaper I'm sticking with RGE

The solar roof tech is okay but efficiency needs to get a lot, lot better. The panels produce less as they age, and then you've got the enjoyment of dealing with them when you need to replace the shingles as well. The tesla panels are like so much from tesla: never pan out.

The one they are doing here is 22 acres. They drill and pour concrete footers and then mount the pipe and panels to that.

If you were pretty thrifty with use and had a massive array you could run your house at night off-grid each day but that enters fully into hobby realm because it just makes no economic sense.

I have such a battery array right now.

It will sit unused most of the time. Once the solar gets hooked up (eventually) it will switch to battery in 4ms on loss of power from the grid.

Basically a whole house UPS.

Batteries cost me a bit over $3k, and with occasional use will last a decade. They can supply our full normal electric load all night.

Normally at night I will just buy power from the grid, and sell excess back during the day for a very low net monthly cost.

But, when the power goes out (which it has here several times this year), by lights won't even flicker. With 2 of us working from home full time that seems like a good plan.

$26/month for batteries seems worth it for the piece of mind.

I can run everything off grid including welders and plasma torch, just not necessarily at the same time.

My utility will not allow you to oversize your array by too much or you become a power plant instead of a residential install and things get a lot messier. Basically you can't generate more than 25% surplus power monthly without crossing the threshold.

We're going to about 115%, but we will only be using 3 of the 4 available mppt strings on the Solarks so expansion will be easily available if we add an electric vehicle charger or something. If I need more than that I can add a 3rd Solark.

They don't want so much that it destabilized the grid.

These are the people who actually have to make the whole thing balance.


Remember, there is no storage to speak of in the electric grid. Every watt of power produced every second of every day has to be precisely balanced by a watt of power used somewhere on that grid at that exact instance.

It's a hell of a balancing act.

Having a significant amount of that power come from sources you can't throttle like rooftop solar is just asking for a meltdown.

I would be happy with the off grid option and 25% surplus. And the thing is in AZ you are pretty much guaranted X KWs per month/year based on weather.

This makes sense. Instead we make them in areas that deer need to roam and we fence them and out them a few feet off the ground at most. Nothing loves there and no wildflowers or meadows for the animals that need them.
