Yeah the knife laws are ridiculous. That being said, if you want one just buy it. Autos are legal to own and you can carry them while fishing or hunting. Sucks you can't carry any other time though.

Love those OTFs that Benchmade makes. I always check them out when I stop by the local gun store.

On a related note, someone posted in another thread (what's your EDC) that he believed that assisted openers like the Kershaw Leek would fall into the category of "gravity knife." I don't believe that to be the case but am interested for the sake of discussion as I have seen Kershaws AOs for sale at many major chain stores. That, and a lot of fellows are walking around with them.

My understanding is that they are not autos as there is no mechanism in the handle to open the blade and they are actually have to be partially pushed open for the spring to activate.

As to "gravity knife," that could be used to describe even an axis lock on a Benchmade

A folding or moveable blade knife in which the blade is held in the closed position by a latch mechanism released by a button on the handle or other mechanical triggering device. A gravity knife does not include a knife that can be opened with one hand utilizing manual pressure applied to the blade, or to a thumb stud, declivity or spur of the blade; nor does gravity knife include a knife with a blade that can be opened by means of inertia or other such force produced by hand, wrist, arm or other bodily movement provided the knife has a detent, spring, structure or other such mechanism that provides a bias or spring-load toward the closed position

Which clearly says a "spur", like the Kershaw Speedsafe has, is NOT a gravity knife. Walmarts all accross NYS sell these by the truckload.
NYS laws defines a gravity knife as......
(5) Gravity knife means any knife which has a blade which is released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever or other device.

Many cops and judges, especially in NYC, believe that the "application of centrifugal force", is referencing the spur on the blade, like the Kershaw Speedsafe.
Very confusing and could get you a Possession of a Weapon in the 4th degree.

Whats funny is the NYC liberals want to get rid of the "gravity knife" law because the NYPD are using it to keep arrest numbers up in the city. It lets the NYPD say they took X number of dangerous weapons off the street, but they don't mention the vast majority of those 'dangerous weapons' are cheap hardware store pocket knives being carried by laborers. Most of whom are black and Hispanic blue collar workers.

I don't really want to offend the officers on this forum but Cuomo knows that keeping the NYC Police union on his side is more important that a fringe issue to minority voters.

Just read his logic behind his decision, says the new legislation would be ambiguous and would impose too heavy a burden on cops and prosecutors.
