Storing Powders...

I keep my powders in a sensible location (correct humidity/temp/etc). However I was thinking instead of them sitting in cardboard boxes, I was thinking of getting a metal cabinet to keep them safe from say a fire or to help mitigate it if something were to occur.

Any thoughts?

Thinking of something like:

I’m not positive on this but I thought I’ve heard not to store them in metal cabinet because if they do burn it would end up like a bomb.

Cardboard holds moisture so that’s not good.
I use a wood kitchen cabinet in the basement mounted high off the floor

Any metal cabinet would serve the same purpose. None of those are fireproof, at best fire resistant. Would help with organization though.
You could probably find a nice one in the garage organization section of Lowe's.

As long as the doors and sides are flimsy enough not to let pressure build, there's no danger from storing powder in a cabinet.

I have all my ammo in a metal lab grade cabinet in metal ammo cans. It looks like it has grounding cables to keep static down. Static would be my only concern.
This does say it should be kept in something with a weak wall or weak seem to be self venting. I’m not sure a flammables cabinet would be considered self venting.

I've got mine in wooden cabinets, most out in the garage and small amounts of what I'm using in the house. I know of a couple guys that keep it in old unplugged refrigerators out in the garage. Do NOT use a strong lockable (or latched) safe or cabinet.

I would not keep them in ammo cans.

Maybe the harbor freight plastic ones, but not the real ones.


In a fire powder in a plastic jug will burn very fast, but probably not actually explode.

Confine it so the pressure can rise quickly, and you might get a real explosion.


Like the difference between burning a hole in the shelf, and throwing bits of flaming wall into the next room.

Drywall makes almost an ideal material to store powder in.

It's frangible, so no pressure buildup.

In a fire it will limit heat transfer significantly (the inside remains below 250 degrees until all the water contained in the hydrate is boiled out).

Not sure how much you have to store, but a box constructed of drywall with some wood for structure would be excellent.

I store powder on open shelving..not in cabinets..definately not in a sealed space. Powder will burn and is considered highly flammable..but under compression of any kind makes matters much worse. I guess if a fire hits it won't matter, or maybe it will. I hope to never find out.
