Agree^ 'Cept it's more like a 2000 yard cartridge. If you wanna do long range a 6.5 Creedmoor would be more practical, or even the humble .308.

Would he fun to bust out at a party if you own a farm. The only one I have seen was at my 200 yard range and the guy was getting crap groups at 100 yards and said he planned on carting this 15+ lb rifle brown bear hunting. Seemed overkill and a crap field gun.

The 338LM is a very nice round. I gave it a try and could not drive the rifle like I wanted.
I guess it ended up being too much for me to be effective. Even after being used to some pretty heavy rifles.
With other rounds that shoot further and flatter with less recoil and expense, it was hard to justify to keep investing on it.

the BA110 is the best route. I would take the action and the barrel but not the BA chassis system.
I think w/o going too crazy even a B&C LA and extra counter weight inserts in the stock will give you more leverage than a cold chassis. I would also put steel base with recoil lug bedded to the action and steel bases like Badger.
I would definitely ask around and try it before buying the rifle.
I guess it all depends on your goals and desires too.

Some people have access to long range venues or hunting goals where the LM might not be 100% needed but also not totally absurd.
I have one and love it.
As far as recoil, mine kicks less than my 308, very manageable recoil.
I have a 400 and 1000 yard range on my property and im working on 1500 and 2000.
At 1000 yards im shooting 3 inch groups. Of course ive only fired 57 rounds at that range. If youre accurate at 100 yards with a 243, you will be accurate with the Lapua at 1000. Put the crosshairs on the target and squeeze the trigger. Almost done with the 2000 yard range, ill let you know how that goes.

I think I have one spot where I could safely shoot 100o yards maybe 1200, I'm not even sure I can do that but hey... I can use the firewood from the trees I need to cut.
It's just that I've kinda been obsessing over this for a while and gander had some rounds for sale, when I showed my kid he freaked and said " dad we need a gun that can shoot those!!!"

Calibers keep going up but not always ballistic performance.
So unless one needs the extra energy past 1000 yards (military for example) this is a more reasonable approach for long range for
many people IMO.
This is the load I am working on right now that shoots flatter and further than the lapua magnum with 1/2 powder and 1/3 of the cost.
People has hunted elk with this bullet as far as 1200 yards.
I am using a 26" bartlein barrel and savage 10 action over a LA B&C varmint/tactical stock.
There are other 30 calibers like the amazing Dakota but one can do more with less due
to the amazing 7mm bullets.

It's true, here in NY there is very little you would need anything more than a .308 for.

Even if it is for the very occasion long range...
There is an easy way to have more power and reach than the 308 with less recoil and cost.
That is the 7mm/08 that is very simple and an amazing round for long range.
Sadly rifle makers do not make long range rifles and much ammo but at the same time
putting one together is a piece of cake. I would go with a 1:8 twist on this one too.
With the right magazine 175gr are not out of the menu. It beats all the 6.5mm and 308w
at everything in terms of ballistics.
The 7mm is just an orgasmic department in terms of bullet performance.

Not a need, just a want. Strictly second kinda cool. It looks bad ass, I don't have a savage, and I mean is it really ever gong to loose more than a few hundred dollars in value? Not that I have ever sold a single gun I have bought but that's how I justify it to the boss.
Savage makes a high value, high quality, affordable gun so if you really gotta scratch that itch (and I think we have all experienced that at one time) than go for it. But I strongly suspect it will either end up gathering dust in the safe or on gunbroker (or what have you) before long. I had a similar fling with a Marlin 45-70 guide gun but the unpleasant recoil and high ammo cost saw it rotate out of my collection pretty quickly. I don't miss it either.
I had a Savage (forgot the model number) .300 RUM once. My B-I-L bought it and never fired it, he traded me it for a 9mm S&W that I was looking to get rid of. It came scoped with a box of shells, I had a muzzle brake put on it and fired three rounds out of it. I sold it a couple of months later. 56 pounds of recoil in a 6 pound gun was a little much for me.

Look up some load data for the 338 and plug it in to the calculator, you will get a "feel" for what you are getting into.
I am not about to discourage anyone from getting anything they want, if you can afford it why not right? I have seen people shooting 50 BMGs at Sacket's Harbor range and well I am glad it was not my shoulder and they were 7 benches away from me.

I'm a big fan of the 338 LM. I have a good friend that has one in a Savage rifle. I love shooting the gun at 1000+ yds. The recoil isn't bad but the gun does weigh a lot. I think the recoil is comparable to a 30-06 hunting rifle. It's not overwhelming but you know you pulled the trigger.
He's been moving away from the 338LM to the 300WM. His reason is there's a slightly more of a challenge shoot 1000+ yds. The 338LM makes shooting these distances quite easy as long as you have enough data to dope the scope right.
As far as expensive of the rounds. Well they are definitely more expensive than a 308. If you reload it brings down the price considerably but still costs a decent amount. But on the flip side how many rounds per session are thinking your going to fire? The cost difference might level out. If you shoot 50 308 compared to 20 338LM.
When I'm ready to do more long distance shooting I'm not 100% sure which caliber I'm going to go with. I'm torn between 7mm-08, 300WM and 338LM. Good luck on your decision, keep us informed!

Why all the discouragement from gun guys.
I agree that the 338 is expensive to shoot and maybe not a great caliber to get just because the gun looks cool but it is a great cartridge.
Its fun to hit a target you cant see with the naked eye. The recoil isnt that bad and its a fun gun to shoot.
All calibers have their place and there may be alot of calibers that can shoot as far, as accurate as the 338 but it also does alot of damage at 1000 yards, which is fun too.
As far as the price of ammo, I use reloads which in this caliber it actually is less expensive.
I love the gun, love the caliber and im willing to pay for my hobby. I have many other guns but this is one of my favorites to shoot.
