Does anyone have an opinion on Taurus Revolvers??? My Leo friend said No Bueno and referred to it as a Perp Gun!!!

For those that haven't had any issues, they'll probably say they like them just fine. I think I'll just say that I know several gunsmiths and/or shop owners that say they've had the more returns of Taurus guns (revolvers and certain model autos) with early breakages or immediate manufacturing issues than just about anything else. They definitely don't have a good reputation among smiths. Based on that, I wouldn't buy one unless it was a heck of a steal and not a gun I ever expected to bet my life on.
Their revolvers are better than their semi autos. But that's not saying all that much

I am really liking the new Raging Hunter in 357, black with either a 5 or 6" barrel. BUT.... I dont know if I would trust my life with it. I wish Ruger or SW would make this same gun. I bought the Taurus 38 specual ultra lite last December.
It's okay for the money, shoots good , but it lacks in fit and finish dept.. I'm much happier with the Charter Arms 38 I bought for the wife.
EEA also has some nice wheel guns in the same price range.

I had a 607, 608 and PT101 got rid of them all and would never buy anything with that brand name again. The revolvers would never keep in time. The Autoloader went with the revolvers.

My father in law tried to GIVE me one of their semi's in .40 which in turn he got for FREE from the shop he works in part time for shits and giggles as a retiree in Michigan for his buddy who owns the shop.

I wouldn’t purchase another Taurus revolver again. I’ve had four. One worked flawlessly. On the upside, their warranty is good, which is nice since I’ve had to send one of them back twice due to the cylinder locking up when the gun got heated up.

Well, I heard or read that the pistols were something to stay away from but the revolvers were OK.
I got the itch for a 9mm revolver. I started checking into revolvers in 9mm that are in current production. Or at least recent production.
I chose the Taurus 905 stainless. Reasons are a separate topic.
It has been perfect in all respects. No problems at all and I am rather accurate with it.
It is my understanding that Taurus was in bed with S&W for a while and some of the design features of S&W show up in the Taurus.

I also own a Manurhin, Walther and Beretta pistols. And two other revolvers manufactured by Dan Wesson. The Tarus revolver seems to

I know I am in the minority, buts that's my experience.

An older Taurus maybe but not one of the newer ones, to many problems. I had a Raging Bull .454 with the black chrome finish and liked it but didn't really have much (if any) use for it so I traded it off. I don't really miss it. I still have a Taurus PT99 AF that I've had for years and put tons of rounds thru it and the only problems were a broken connecting link and something happened to the rear sight that allowed it to move to the right, a drop of Loc-tite fixed that.
I have the fixed sight version pt-92. That thing runs like a champ. I specifically picked that Taurus over the beretta 92, I believe it's the better gun.

I have one of each and the Beretta has a better trigger and seems to have a slightly smoother action, but you can only tell by firing one and then immediately firing the other.

Having said that I have worked in a few shops in the last twenty years that have carried Taurus products and I have seen both good and terrible guns. Going back 15+ years ago the first shop sold more Taurus than any other brand and for a while they were great. Both revolvers and autos were solid performers, with a rental PT92 that went hundreds of thousands of rental rounds before finally cracking the frame. Taurus replaced it. But then in the mid 2000s the wheels fell of and we had a hugh rash of problems,one in ten had failures, including one notable 357 mag that blew the barrel and shroud completely off and down range on the first shot. Warranty claims started to take months and months to resolve. The second shop had similar issues. My current workplace will not stock Taurus and for the most part we discourage special orders.
I'm not going to say that everything current is junk, but I will say "buy with caution." Also, one of the nicest guns I owned a while ago was a seven shot (607?) 357 mag so . . . YMMV

@FLA45fan IIRC they had a big ol' recall around the time you're describing (or maybe more recently)? I can't remember what for though.
I don't recall any recalls (hehehe) back then but recently the PT111 and PT132s were subject to one I think.
Ya know, to be fair, just about every manufacturer has had some sort of issue or recall at one point or another. But it seems that Taurus has had more multi model issues than any other IMHO.

I’ve personally never owned one , but a couple of friends of mine did back in the mid 80’s and I don’t remember them having any issues. One of the guys still owns his and it’s a shooter. I do know that the model 720 revolvers have a cult like following. Probably one of their best made revolvers.

He has a Raging Hornet, a Model 85 in 38 Special, a 4 inch 357, a PT 740 Slim and a full size auto 9mm.
He bought the first one, the Model 85, in 2011. He goes through alot of ammo at my house and has never had an issue with any of them.
At one point the PT 740 was having an ejection problem. I thought, " ha, here comes the problems". But when we inspected the gun, it was chocked full of pocket lint. After a soaking in G96 and a 1 minute wipe down, it ran great.

I have a rossi 357 six round I carry on My ankle easily/comfort and it was made by Taurus in Brazil. A "story" I heard last year was Brazil dumped smith and wesson,kept their equipment/buildings and make Sand W guns using the same equipment but now under the Taurus name. Very happy with the Rossi

I have had good service from the 2 Taurus revolvers I have owned. My 1st one was a Raging Bull in .454 casull, I loved that gun for it's power, and the trigger in DA was amazing. I traded it off when I moved down here, because I acquired some other "things" that I couldn't own up there. I do miss it now, would be fun to have another, at the right price of course! My other 1, which I still have is a Tracker 992, which is a .22lr/.22mag revolver. This revolver has some weight to it, and shoots really well. The switching of the cylinders is basically; swing out the cylinder, and press a button, and insert other cylinder. I like to take this revolver with me when I'm squirrel hunting, loaded with .22mag "snake shot", because it is not uncommon to run into a copperhead, or cottonmouth down here.

I've owned a Taurus 605 (2" bbl / 5 shot / .357) for 3 years. As I do with every gun I have ever owned I test fire them to try and make them fail. In one outing I took 500 rounds (all .357 in this case) and shot it repetitively with no FTF or function issues. It makes for a rigorous cleaning after, but I would leave knowing if I was holed up somewhere with only this gun, I could at least shoot 500 rounds without failure. Now I know a 2" bbl revolver isn't the ideal tool for a shootout, but it would at least be reliable.

While I dislike their Semi auto's, my two Taurus 444UL .44 mag revolvers have been good to me and that's what I've been carrying while Hunting or Hiking in bear country for years.
I've been shooting them regularly for the last couple of years with no issues too.
They go bang when I need them to, are easy handling and because of their weight, I sometimes forget that I'm carrying them.
I bought a S&W 329PD before the 444's, but it broke and it also kicked like a mule, so away it went.

I have a .357 Model 66 SS w/6" barrel that shoots lights out. For that reason I bought a Model 44 44 magnum. That thing shot 8" to the left with factory ammo. I loaded up some .430 HiTek coated and got it to around 4" left with the sights slightly to the right. If I buried the sights to the right it shot OK. Looks stupid as hell though.
I sent it back to Taurus on my $50 dime and it came back the same way. no improvement whatsoever. I took it to my LGS with the intent to trade it to Gunbroker for a Ruger Super Redhawk for $350. He called me the next day and said he sold it for $400 and he would just take $25 for FFL fees.
I didn't want anyone local to have it because it sucked sooo much and I didn't want him to catch shit for it. Never heard another word about it.
My Super Redhawk shoots dead nuts.
