It’s complete BS. If the drunk driver had any money they would be sued for the money. But 99% of the drunk driver’s who kill people don’t have a pot to piss in, and I bet 3/4 don’t even have insurance, so making them pay child support does nothing.

Most likely feel good legislation but I like the intent. OTOH, I believe in some states, if you get divorced, you may have to pay child support for years after the child turns 18 if they are in college.

This isn’t making it more illegal it’s holding people responsible for their actions financially to the people they harmed and not the government.

As stated above, there is a robust civil process which only needs a plurality to find culpability.

I understand your sentiment here, but there are benefits to this. The money will go directly to the child and it’s outside of a lawsuit. I’m general wages can be garnished and if the courts do it on behalf of the child there is no extra lawsuit to go through. Yes I’m sure there would still be a civil suit.
I’m not sure where the 99% of drunk drivers stat comes from, but many have money. Also most insurances don’t cover dunk driving because it’s a criminal action. You can’t insure a criminal act. Tennessee is an at-fault state. Tennessee DUI Law: Injured in a Drunk Driving Accident?

Those whom can maneuver throughout the legal system will never pay their 'fair share'.
Those without such means, will be compelled to pay at least the minimum child support due, which is $25.00 per month.

Because many, if they go to jail, go for very, very short sentences.

NY is one of those. It can continue past 21 if the now-legal-adult attends college.

Heh, seems lines are getting blurry between civil and criminal penalties. What's next? Personally if someone killed a family member of mine last thing in the world I'd want is to be tied to that person for financial support. I'd more likely want a pound of flesh. Just saying...

The problem I have with the whole DWI thing is the limit which they call influence, impaired.
Never liked the idea of them taking a person's second amendment rights away for a DWI crime either.
