Test meant to screen teachers instead weeded out minorities
NEW YORK (AP) - New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.

The state Board of Regents on Monday is expected Monday to adopt a task force's recommendation of eliminating the literacy exam, known as the Academic Literacy Skills Test.

Backers of the test say eliminating it could put weak teachers in classrooms. Critics of the examination said it is redundant and a poor predictor of who will succeed as a teacher.

You would be surprised with the quality of teachers thqt have been hired the last couple of years. It's appalling watching the uneducated teaching the young children. We have teachers that have taken the LAST & ATSW 10-14 times to pass. Thank god I can go out in 2 years!!!

No offense taken. Since you could write those sentences with a few grammatical errors, thank a teacher!
In the Navy, my RDC told me, to teach takes a lot of mental and physical control. The mental part is listening to the whiners. The physical control is not to kick their asses.
Ive worked With Grumman after my enlistment and in the corporate world after that. By far, teaching is the hardest profession that I've had. Studies show, that 1/2 of the teachers quit in their first five years. That's BS, it's much higher than 50%.

I do thank my teachers. Even though they were NYC public school teachers I believe I received a good education (back in the '60's through the mid '70's), and I even possess the ability to be a free thinker. That's the problem these days. Apparently today's educators think it's their duty to impart their politics on our youth.

I also teach in NYCDOE, I'm a special education teacher. I too try to impart some of my conservative views upon my students who hate Trump. I can't win!!!

For those that think that teaching is easy, volunteer in a middle/high school for a day. I guaran fuggin tee, you will never feel that way again. I dare ya!!!
