The Burdick decision stated that a pardon carries "an imputation of guilt and acceptance of a confession of it" in the court's dictum for the case. While that sounds like it supports the interpretation of the scholars you mention, we have to pick apart the definitions of the words to really understand it, specifically, "imputation" and "dictum."
"Imputation" is defined as "a charge or claim that someone has done something undesirable; an accusation."
A "dictum" is a non-binding statement of opinion.
Given those definitions, what the court is saying is that, in their non-binding opinion, acceptance of a pardon can be perceived as an admission of guilt. In other words, if one accepts a pardon, people might consider it an admission of guilt. It does not establish a legal precedent, nor does it imply any form of legal establishment of guilt.
More contemporary decisions, such as Lorance v. Commandant (106 years after the Burdick decision) essentially state the same thing. And there are certainly plenty of legal scholars on my side of the debate. Brian Kalt is one such scholar, and he states the following: "'It is certainly true that as a practical matter, and a matter of public opinion, a pardon can make the recipient look guilty, but sometimes people overread Burdick and say that accepting a pardon has some sort of formal legal effect of declaring someone guilty. That is not the case.'"
