Just need to be careful with that. A malicious bot could execute a ton of queries all at once without search limiting. Been there, done that. Actually knocked my shared hosts' datacenter connection offline because of it. Some scriptkiddy decided it would be fun to buttfuck my phpbb TESTING instance, rather than the production one. What a nightmare that was.

15 seconds isn't bad. Spacebattles the pet forums of Kier Darby, the guy who developed XenForo had no search function for months because of server issues.

With modern servers and forum software, that message is a little ridiculous.

I used to belong to a forum that wouldn't allow you to EDIT POSTS because it "put too much strain of the server."

In 2005.

Don't get me wrong, I like vBulletin, but the person behind this XenForo stuff on this forum certainly knows what they are doing.

I highlighted a bit of text I wanted to quote earlier today, and nearly crapped my pants when the "quote/multi-quote" options came up. Seriously, try it. It's great. It automatically quotes just the text you want, and begins a reply. xD

Sounds similar to a DDoS, which again can be deflected with the right software know how.

Xenforo is some pretty great software. There's a reason why you have to pay for it

Not familiar with modern forum software but even a check saying no more searches than ten per minute before hitting a timer would fix that without bugging legit users.
