A buddy's father owns some land nearby. A portion of that land has a power line right of way running through it. On that portion, they have strategically placed a 'shooting house', on a slope overlooking a long stretch of the power lines. Shots can be as long as 600 yards plus, verified with an accurate rangefinder. The shooting house faces, correctly, almost due north. The sun is never in your face, always at your back, so you are in the shadows. The wind here especially in November is almost always out of the west, northwest, or north, so basically your 9:00-12:00. This obviously helps keep any whitetail from winding you. Deer normally cross this right of way in mid to late afternoon. As deer are prone to do, they stop at the edge and look for danger for awhile, then cross.
I have been invited along for a hunt this fall. I have been invited before, but never went. I was always too busy hunting my own land. This year, I accepted. I maintain contact with my buddy year round. We are always planning our upcoming deer season. We do this all year, and share daily successes and failures during deer season. He has been frustrated, having a few opportunities on some nice bucks at long range, which resulted in misses. When he says 'nice buck', he means a long tined 8 point, or better.
I told him about the new scope I ordered, and explained it's features. Some of it he doesn't quite get. He doesn't understand the mechanics of ballistic coefficients, trajectories, and wind drift etc. I will help him, usually he has to be hands on. We have come to refer to a 400+ yard shot on the power lines as making an 'incredible shot'. which is what I intend to accomplish.
Normally I don't share my experiences, as I am a private man of a few close friends, by choice. I would like to share the planning and preparation for these hunts, as well as the results. We both have video cameras, and intend to hunt together in the same shooting house. Perhaps I can teach someone a thing or two along the way, and learn a thing or two myself.
